Look for the Glimmers!
A glimmer is the opposite of a trigger. A glimmer gives us hope and joy when we need it. This week, we are looking for the glimmers!
I have learned a new word usage that I really like and want to share with you. We are all familiar with the concept of mental health triggers. Triggers are words, topics, thoughts, and images that can stimulate an unpleasant emotional reaction.
A glimmer is the opposite of a trigger. In this modern slang usage, a glimmer is something that stimulates a positive, hopeful, joyful emotional reaction.
A glimmer can be something that reminds you of a good thing that happened in the past. A glimmer can be something that feels uplifting for you in the moment.
We look for trigger warnings to avoid exposing ourselves to something that could hurt us or slow our healing.
What would happen if we started to look for glimmers? What are the signs of hope around us? What can you see, hear, find, or think about that could give you a momentary sense of joy?
What are things that reliably bring you cheer?
For me, looking for glimmers is a spiritual practice. I believe that the Universe sends us all sorts of signs. Sometimes we want to interpret those signs as a specific piece of advice. I worry that we often interpret these signs based on our fears and desires. We think hope is about getting what we want and avoiding what we don’t want.
I think it can be helpful to find the glimmers of joy and embrace the energy of hope without tightly defining what the realization of that hope might look like. The more that our glimmers allow us not only to hope but also to trust, the more uplifted we can be.

Her presentation “Strega Strategies” at StaarCon 2023 was inspiring and enlightening. We are so excited that Teri has agreed to join us in 2024, and we cannot wait to learn more from her!
Which Tarot Cards Speak of Hope?
While we can find hope in any tarot card and any tarot reading, some cards specifically offer a hopeful message. Some cards, like the Star and the Nine of Cups, are obviously hopeful.
Many other cards can be interpreted in a hopeful way, depending on the context in which they appear.
Here are three tarot cards not typically associated with hope that can sometimes surprise you with a hopeful message.
The Four of Pentacles is often associated with selfishness and miserly behavior. Yet, the Four of Pentacles offers a hopeful message when it can be interpreted to encourage healthy boundaries and good self-care.
The Moon is traditionally a card of mystery, treachery, and hidden enemies. Yet, it is also a card that encourages our psychic development and spiritual growth.
The Seven of Pentacles in the Waite-Smith Tarot is associated with the Irish Potato Famine. Yet, it can also be an admonition to tend your garden with care in anticipation of a harvest.
When we look at these three cards, we can understand that many, most, or all tarot cards can speak of hope in some way. As an exercise, pull a card at random. No matter what the card is, find a way to see a hopeful message for yourself within it.

Creation and Divination
When we look for hopeful signs and joyful reminders in our day-to-day lives, we will undoubtedly find them. We can also find these signs within our tarot decks.
Use your creativity to ask questions and interpret cards to give you the glimmer you need. This requires advanced tarot skills because of the specific context of the question.
For example, suppose you asked for something that would give you a sense of joy, and you received the Three of Swords. How can you interpret the Three of Swords in a way that gives you a joyful moment? You might place the sorrow of the Three of Swords in the past and find joy in the healing you have accomplished. You might see the swords in the image as hard truths you are embracing and find joy in your capacity.
What if you receive a card typically associated with joy or happiness? That can also be challenging because a card with the keyword ‘joy’ will not bring a moment of joy simply because of its keyword. You must dive more deeply into the card to find a specific joyful message for yourself.
This exercise utilizes your creativity and strengthens your tarot skills as you find glimmers within your tarot deck.

Little Bites
We solve big problems a little at a time.
You may have heard the Chinese proverb that “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step’”.
This week at the tarot table I have talked with so many people who are feeling overwhelmed, for a variety of reasons.
Though their situations were different, the ultimate question was the same.
“How do I handle this?”
While the cards had specific and individual advice for each person, they all each received a similar message as well. That message is a bit of wisdom that is good for all of us to remember.
When facing a daunting task, don’t tackle it all at once. Don’t get ahead of yourself in figuring out how you are going to manage the things that will come in the future. Look at what is on your plate today, right now, and take it in manageable little bites.
Some people call it taking ‘baby steps.’ I don’t love that analogy. Babies take small, wobbly, faltering steps because they don’t know how to walk. Addressing something that feels overwhelming in little bites takes wisdom and mastery.
It is easy to feel overwhelmed when we look at the whole of a thing, whether that thing is starting a business, catching up on piled up work, going through a divorce, or healing from a loss. Yet, when we focus simply on one task at a time, our mission becomes bearable and doable.
It can take some finesse to figure out what the little bites are, and what in what order they must be done. That’s where divination, counseling, or a trusted expert can help.
It’s important to remember this, too. The bigger the task, the better the reward will be when we get through it. When we are suffering, it is hard to consider that there will come a time when we will feel joy once more. When we are overwhelmed, it is hard to know that there will come a time when we will be able to relax. Yet, when we chew through our difficultly in little bites, eventually we will get to the other side of it.

Tarot Beyond the Veil
On Tuesday, October 27, from 7 pm to 9 pm EDT, I am teaching a very special class on Zoom.
Tarot Beyond the Veil is a class about using tarot to connect with spirit.
In this class we will learn ways to use tarot for mediumship.
In a tarot reading, we can be in direct communication with our angels, guides, and loved ones in spirit. In this class, you will learn a variety of techniques to conduct these deeply spiritual readings for yourself and others.
Class fee is $37.50. Register now on Zoom.
Learning Tarot in Little Bites
One task that can seem daunting is learning the seventy-eight cards of tarot, and then learning the intricate art of seeing how those cards work together in a reading. There is so much to know and remember, even beyond what we must intuit.
Like most daunting tasks, the best way to learn tarot is in little bites. Here are three ways to do that.
Card of the Day (COTD)
Every day, preferably at the same time, draw a card at random. Look up its meaning in numerous sources, look at the image, thing about what the card might mean to you in this current moment, and other ways this card may have spoken to you at other times in your life. Journal about the card. Later on, look back and see how this card was reflected in your day or week in ways you might not have expected.
Tarot in Sections
Learn tarot one section at a time. You can start with the Majors only. Learn these twenty-two cards and do readings with only these cards. Then you can learn the Minors either by suit or by number. When you feel comfortable with a new section, add them in to your readings. Eventually you will be reading with the full deck.
One Card a Week
Put your tarot deck in order. Each week, starting with the Fool and moving forward in order from there, study one card. See how the energy of that card shows up over the course of the week. During the week, read everything you can about that card, and work to form your own understanding of it. After seventy-eight weeks, you will have a very clear understanding of the tarot cards.

Cards for Your Consideration
When confronting overwhelming tasks, the Sevens of tarot offer a great deal of wisdom and insight.
In tarot, I see the number Seven as related to the journey of the individual, and the journey within. These cards each describe something we can do for ourselves that no one else can do for us.
The Seven of Cups reminds us to use our imagination to consider what is available to us and warns us against fearful imaginings.
The Seven of Wands reminds us that we are able to multi-task, and strong enough to stand against multiple attacks and superior odds.
The Seven of Pentacles instructs us to tend our garden tirelessly, knowing that it will one day bear fruit.
The Seven of Swords asks us to be on the alert against treachery, but also remind us to think craftily to solve our problems.
The Chariot affirms that we are the masters of our destiny, and able to bring together what we need to move forward.

What Numbers Mean
This week we explore the spiritual value of numbers.
Numbers have always had a significance to us that is more that quantitative.
Consider the golden ratio, the number thirteen, or the meaning of the universe in Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Universe (It’s 42 if you didn’t read the book).
For some, numbers hold prophetic value. Some folks have a ‘lucky number’. Many people see the appearance of specific numbers as a sign of the presence of their angels, or those in spirit. Many esoteric systems include the power of numbers, including, of course, numerology. In numerology, important numbers in our lives are broken down into single digits which both give us information and attune us to specific energies.
In mystical Judaism the practice of gematria assigns numbers to Hebrew scriptures, giving special power to those numbers.
In some schools of belief, numbers have power that can be utilized in manifestation. For example, if you want to attract a new partner, surround yourself with pairs of things. If you want good luck for your children, surround yourself with items in the same number as the number of kids you have.
It is virtually impossible to find a school of belief that doesn’t in some way employ numbers in a spiritual way. Maybe that is because numbers are such an indisputable constant in the universe.
Numbers are assigned to tarot cards, Kabalistic sephira, Bible verses, astrological houses and the letters of the alphabet. Numbers are assigned to us individually based on our birthdate, our name, our phone number, our age and our address.
Take a moment to think about the ways that you think of numbers in a mystical way.
Have you studied any form of numerology, or any spiritual system that includes numbers?
Many people have special numbers that they notice on clocks, street signs, and license plates. People often tell me that they see a certain number over and over again. Some people feel that number means something but aren’t sure what it means. Others have looked up traditional associations for it. Others ask me to interpret it. The thing that remains true is that folks seem to naturally feel that numbers relay a special message.
Perhaps numbers are a sacred language of the universe, and therefore a way for the universe to communicate with us.
Certainly, numbers carry meaning that directly affects our lives. Grades, wealth and health data are all communicated via numbers. It would make sense that spiritual information would be communicated that way was well.

Numbers in Tarot Study Exercises
Numbers and numerology play a very strong role in tarot. Numbers, along with the four suits, create structure in tarot. Numbers can help us learn the cards. Numbers also add to the interpretive value of cards and tarot spreads.
It is very important to understand the value of each number in tarot. It is also a good idea to treat the ranks of the Court in the same way that you would a number. That is, assigning keywords and an interpretive value to each rank.
In traditional numerology, interpretive value is assigned to each numeral one through nine. Multiple-digit numbers are reduced to become single-digit numbers. Reduction is done by adding the digits together. The number ten, for example, is reduced to one plus zero, which equals one.
The Minor Arcana of tarot, however, contains cards One (Ace) through Ten. The Tens don’t mean the same thing as the Aces. Therefore, in tarot, Tens have their own meaning. That is one way that tarot numerology is different from traditional numerology.
The Major Arcana is numbered as well. That is, all except the Fool. Some tarotists assign the number twenty-two to the Fool. Others, me included, prefer to leave the Fool as the sole unnumbered card in the deck.
When considering the numbers of the Major Arcana, consider cards one through nine, that is, Magician through Hermit, as the primary cards. Cards ten through twenty-one, that is, Wheel of Fortune Through World, can be reduced to single numbers. This is a way of grouping and associating Major Arcana cards by number. For example, as we mentioned before, ten becomes one. Therefore, the Wheel of Fortune is associated with the Magician. Card Nineteen, the Sun, becomes a one a well.
Larger-numbered Major Arcana cards will only have two cards in their number grouping, such as Strength and Star, or Lovers and Devil. Earlier ones in the group will have three, such as Magician, Wheel of Fortune and Sun, and Empress, Hanged Man and World.
A great tarot exercise is to create nine groups of Major Arcana cards according to their numbers and decide how the cards in each number group relate to each other, and how they each express the energy of their number.
You can do the same thing with the Minor Arcana cards. This will help you understand the keywords and meanings for each number and rank.
Then, you can look at Major and Minor cards by number together, to see how the energy of each number is communicated throughout all of the tarot cards associated with that number.

Cards for Your Consideration
I asked members of one of my favorite Facebook tarot groups, Tarot Nerds, which specific tarot card they associated with counting, or quantifying something. There were enough votes for different cards to suggest that there is no one card that is universally associated with numbers, counting or quantifying.
Yet, the card that received the most votes was the Seven of Pentacles.
The Seven of Pentacles is typically shown as a tired gardener. In the Crowley-Harris-Thoth Tarot the Seven of Disks is called “Failure”. In this version of tarot, it seems that the garden has withered and there is nothing left to count.
I prefer a more optimistic view of this card. I believe that with hard work, and pushing through fatigue, there will be a time of success, and a bounty that can be quantified.
What is being counted in this card? It is the fruit on the vines as it emerges and ripens? Is it the hours of toil, or the weeks until harvest? Are we counting the time until we can rest?
We might see a suggestion in this card to avoid counting our harvest until it is ready.
Many times, I have seen the Seven of Pentacles as a card of hard work and fatigue. Now I will add to that the idea of quantifying the investment into the harvest, as well as the harvest itself.

The Nurture of Nature
Connect with the nurturing energies of nature!
Springtime brings us many opportunities to celebrate nature, and nurturance. Earth Day, Beltane (May Day) and Mother’s Day (in the United States) all occur within a few weeks of each other. There’s even an official “World Naked Gardening Day” this week.
It makes sense that, as the Earth awakens, we take time to celebrate the natural world, and the important ways in which the Earth nurtures us.
Mother’s Day is a time when we honor the women who nurture us. For many, Mother’s Day is a difficult holiday. Those who have lost mothers or children, and those who didn’t grow up with a nurturing mother, are often reminded of their loss at this time.
Whether or not we were nurtured as children, and whether or not we have children to nurture, we can connect with the energy of nurturance by connecting with the planet that sustains us.
When we nurture nature in our lives, and allow nature to nurture us, we connect to a powerful energy that can sustain us, heal us, and make us stronger.
This week, plant a garden, or buy a houseplant. Walk barefoot in the dewy grass. Eat a farm-to-table meal. Spend time outdoors, and revel in the nurturance that the Earth provides each one of us.
While we honor our mothers, remember that the Earth is our mother, too.
Finding Nature and Nurture in Tarot
There are many cards in tarot that speak of mothers and children. There are also many cards that speak of nature, and our connection to the natural world. Some of these references are obvious, others are ones you may not have considered.
It’s interesting, too, that some of the cards that reference mothers and children could also reference nature. For example, the first “mother” card we usually think of is the Empress.
Certainly, the Empress references our mothers. The Empress can predict pregnancy, or deliver a message from a mother in spirit. The Empress can also reference the bounty of Earth, fertility of all types, fecundity, and the Earth Mother.
Other cards that can reference mothers are the Queens. Typically, the Queen of Swords is problematic in this context. Traditionally, the Queen of Swords can be a widow, or childless, or bereaved. She can also be a difficult mother, without the ability to give proper nurturance.
Children, of course, can be indicated by Pages and Knights. The Six of Cups can indicate children, or a return to a childhood home. The Ten of Pentacles and the Ten of Cups each reference family relationships.
We find references to the natural world in many tarot cards. Of course, the whole suit of Pentacles in the “Earth” suit. We are often trained to see this suit as predominately being about money, but truly, each of the Pentacles cards can discuss our connection to the Earth,
Both the Seven and Nine of Pentacles specifically reference a garden, for instance.
The Ace of Pentacles can reference the Root Chakra, and our grounding connecting to Earth.
Other cards that can speak of nature include Strength, which is often the card of the animal lover.
In an animal lover’s reading, Pages and Knights can reference their pets, as well as their children.
The Star can invite us to experience the healing power of nature.
The World, of course, can remind us of all the resources that the Earth provides for us, and can deliver to us a message of environmentalism.
The Six of Cups and the Ten of Pentacles can each ask us to look to ways of the past; to adopt simpler and more natural ways of eating, healing, and living more lightly on the planet.

Number Eight
Hello Bright Sparks!
This week it’s all about the money, honey! One of the 8 vibration’s biggest lessons is creating the right relationship with money. Have you been working diligently towards paying down debt, being responsible with your financial planning & investments and working hard towards your goals? Or, have you been over-spending and not saving up for a rainy day? Whatever behaviors you’ve engaged in come to a karmic head under the 8 cycle. It forces you to be honest with how you have been empowering or disempowering yourself to stand on firmer financial ground.
An 8 person has the power to achieve great things in their lives. If their mindset is focused on hard work and abundance like the 8 of Pentacles, they can experience great rewards such as a promotion, raise or public recognition in their careers. Its their drive and tenacity that allows them to live a successful lifestyle and be the leader that inspires others to achieve the best.
However, if they are operating from their shadow side, you may see them sucked into a victim mentality much like the 8 of Swords, where their inaction leads to barely making ends meet due to a poverty mindset. Or, they may become so focused on world domination, that their God becomes money and power. So, an 8 must always remember to balance the spiritual with the material.
Over the course of their journey, the Universe will illuminate the great power that lies within them to manifest big dreams. They can ultimately take a page from the Strength card of the Tarot, which also vibrates to an 8 energy, to remember that strength comes from a balance of power. It’s not manipulation or control that help you get your needs met. It’s tapping into your inner well of strength to use the tools of gentle persuasion and influence to rise above the challenges and adversity standing in your way.
Some questions to ponder when you find the 8 vibration affecting your outer world are: Where do I need a better relationship to money? How can I create more abundance in my thinking and in my actions? Do I need better boundaries? Am I being too controlling or bossy? Or do I need to step up, be more honest and take better control of my life?
This week’s vibrational takeaway in working with the 8 is to explore personal power, what you need to do to create more of it, and how you can empower others to stand in their own manifestation space. Meditate on the Strength card to find the courage to move past your own glass ceiling.
With love & stardust!

Three Ways to Feel Nurtured by Nature
If you are not a person who enjoys hiking, camping, gardening or other outdoor activities, or if your schedule doesn’t always allow you to spend your day at the beach, here are three quick ways you can find your grounding and healing connection to nature.
Eat raw foods.
When you make a snack of raw fruits or vegetables, spend a moment thinking about the fact that this food came directly from the Earth. As you eat it, take a moment, not only to taste the food, but to feel its connection to the Earth. As you feel that connection, you will become more grounded, and feel more nurtured.
Meditate with the Root Chakra.
The Root Chakra, located at the base of the spine, is the chakra that connects to Earth. In meditation, send energy from your Root Chakra, down through your legs and feet, and into the Earth. Visualize that energy digging in to the soil like roots. Then, pull energy from the Earth up, from those roots, and in to your body. You will be amazed at how this meditation energizes and grounds you.
Create and perform a tarot spread.
Create and perform a tarot spread that helps you make your connection with Earth. Perhaps the spread could include positions for things like “what grounds me” and “what nurtures me”. As you perform the reading, pay attention to the “Earth” cards that appear, and the cards that make you think of nature.

Your One Card Weekly Reading
Seven of Pentacles
Your one-card reading this week is the Seven of Pentacles. Drawn at random, this card fits perfectly with our theme!
This card has a bit of a bad reputation in some circles. Crowley called this the card of “Failure”. The esoteric title for the Seven of Pentacles is “Lord of Success Unfulfilled”.
Those of us who work with the Waite tradition see something more hopeful in this card. Often, I call this the card of the “tired gardener.”
We may be nurturing an actual garden, or the garden may be a metaphor for something that we need to nurture, like a business, a relationship, or self.
The process of bringing something to fruition is long and tiring. Sometimes it may feel futile.
The Seven of Pentacles reminds us to keep at our task. No matter how bleak things look, if we continue to nurture the garden, it will most certainly bear fruit.
Sometimes the problem with nurturing something (or someone) is that it can take a really long time to see the results of your efforts.
The Seven of Pentacles encourages us to keep working, and keep trying, and promises us that eventually, we will have the harvest we desire.
