How We Stay Magical
The world sometimes makes us feel uninspired. Here is how we remember our magical selves.
Illustration of a woman dancing amongst the stars.
How We Stay Magical
For many of us, coming back from StaarCon, whether we attended in person or virtually, is very much like coming home from summer camp or a wonderful vacation. We have just had a fabulous time focused on healing, spirit, community, love, and laughter, and now we must return to the real world.
This ‘back to reality’ feeling can hit us after a holiday, a good weekend, or a pleasant time with a friend. Whenever we do something that helps us recharge and recreate, we can feel a sense of loss when we return to our daily lives.
The irony is that these retreats and times away are meant to bolster us and give us courage and meaning in our daily lives. Yet so often, these experiences leave us wanting more of that fellowship, support, and good energy, and thus feeling bereft.
My mother used to say that being sad when the party was over was a sign that the party was a success.
The times we spend gathering with our communities and friends remind us of who we are. The things we learn and experience together strengthen us.
We must be able to seek out connections with the people, places, and things that matter most to us, and we must be able to use the energy of those connections to keep us focused, enthused, and creative as we go forward.
This is how we keep the magic going in our mundane lives. We must inspire each other and allow ourselves to feel inspired. We must bring joy to one another and allow ourselves to feel joy.
Many things in the world conspire to steal our joy, peace, and hope. Staying in our magical energy and remembering our magical selves is how we protect our way forward.
Staying our magical selves means never giving up our joy, identity, connections, or power.

Tarot Reminds Us
Remembering who we are is essential to staying inspired and magical. So often, life twists us and makes us feel less or different than we are.
We can keep our cards at hand and ask them to remind us who we are, what inspires us, and what we need to do to stay inspired. That could be a simple three-card spread or something more complex.
We can also think of a card that inspires us and use that image to keep us on track.
We can use tarot in many ways to remind us of our power, joy, inspiration, and sense of self.

From Around the Web
It bothers me when people refer to tarot, witchery, and esoterica as ‘trending.’ Yet, I also get excited when I read articles, like this one from The Times, that discuss how tarot is being used and celebrated worldwide.
I found this tarot spread from The Hermit’s Mirror that is designed to help us in the task of creating magic.
We often discuss romance and love using tarot. However, tarot is just as effective in helping us navigate friendships. Check out this post and tarot spread from Backyard Banshee!

Communities
We have a decision! For the next year, this column in the newsletter will be dedicated to information and inspiration about community-building and how we support and inspire one another.
You might find a review of a new deck or book from members of our divination community. You might discover community-building tarot spreads, tips, and tricks.
Please email me with community news, reviews, or ideas to share in this space!

Good Fences
This week, inspired by Robert Frost's famous poem, we discuss why boundaries are important.
A stone wall in the woods.
Though I have many, one of my favorite Robert Frost poems is “Mending Wall.” Growing up in the Northeastern states, I know well the stone fences running through the woods and how easily nature conspires to break them down.
In the poem, Frost and his neighbor meet to repair the stone wall. The neighbor says, “Good fences make good neighbors.” Written in 1914, this poem uses the stone wall as a metaphor for boundaries.
The term ‘boundaries,’ which describes our ability to protect ourselves by setting limits, began in the 1990s. Books, blog posts, and podcasts that teach us to say no and set boundaries are proliferating, likely because we all need help learning not to feel guilty for having needs and desires.
But why do good fences make good neighbors? First, if we have a clear social contract with each other, our peaceful coexistence is assured. Maybe even more important is this.
If we are unable to say no and set boundaries with others, we are automatically at the mercy of others and have no control over our own destiny.
People might be disappointed when we say no, and that’s okay. However, if they are angry, belittling, or shaming us when we set boundaries, they give us a sign to make those boundaries even more restrictive.
Spending less time and energy on people who resist our boundaries gives us more time and energy to build deep and trusting relationships with people who honor and respect us as we do them.

Our Boundaries as Diviners
Most of us who read for others, either professionally or casually, have a set of ethics we follow. The thing is that each reader has unique ethical commitments. A set of agreed-upon ethics for diviners has never been established and should never be.
While our practices and experiences may be similar, each diviner is an individual with specific needs, concerns, and considerations. We must each feel free to create a personal or professional practice that works for us.
No two readers or two reading practices will ever be exactly the same. We become the best readers we can be by feeling comfortable with our practices and ethical boundaries.
Beyond ethics, there are boundaries around what we enjoy and want to do. Just because we can do something does not mean we are duty-bound. We find much more joy and success when we pare down our practice to the aspects of divination and connection we enjoy the most. If you want to read for people, you can choose the times, places, and ways to do that. Don’t let anyone shame you or wheedle you into doing a reading you don’t want to do.

Lessons in Optimism
I choose to be optimistic about the year ahead, and I choose optimism as a practice. Here's why.
Whoops! I goofed. Looking for this week’s newsletter?
Read Good Fences for January 15th.
A woman with a pink umbrella jumps with optimism, against a grey building.
While many are entering this new year with some trepidation, I am actively optimistic. Although I don’t think false hope is helpful in any situation, I do not believe optimism is ever false hope. So, what is the difference between false hope and optimism?
False hope happens when we refuse to see and accept difficult circumstances. False hope keeps us from making good plans in the face of tragedy. False hope leads to anger and regret. False hope is based on denial.
Optimism, on the other hand, is a practice. With optimism, we can prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
One of the best lessons in optimism I ever had was from my mother, just after she received a devastating medical diagnosis. Here is what she told me. She wanted to live to be able to travel and have fun, and she looked forward to dancing at her young grandchildren’s weddings. But if she didn’t live, that would mean she would be with God and with my father, who had passed just two years earlier. Either way, she was fine.
I do not think I have ever seen a human, before or since, process a life-changing diagnosis with such optimism. In truth, it reminded me of the last scene and closing song of the Monty Python movie Life of Brian, where we are comically and sacrilegiously encouraged to “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.”
In retrospect, I learned a lot from my mother that day. I learned that we can fight for what we want, accept that we might not get it, and be okay with whatever happens.
What helped my mother in the face of her impending mortality was her spiritual faith. I have seen spiritual faith bring healing, peace, and joy, and I have seen spiritual faith bring torment and oppression. The outcome of faith depends on how your spirituality is expressed and the dogma you choose to accept. If your faith helps you be realistically optimistic, your faith is helpful. If your faith discourages you from optimism or encourages spiritual bypassing, your faith is likely doing you more harm than good.
Realistic optimism and positive thinking allow us to live the best way possible. My mother proved that we can be optimistic even in dire situations and that realism and optimism should co-exist.
My mother died two decades ago. Yet, her lessons in optimism guide me now. This is another reason to be optimistic, as it proves our lasting positive impact on those around us, even long after we leave.

When Tarot Should Not Be Optimistic
I love to say that there are no bad cards in tarot. The Tower can be just as helpful as the Ten of Cups. Yet, the interpretation of the cards comes from us, not from the cards themselves.
The recent YouTube Short I shared was that tarot should never be interpreted to predict a happy outcome for a brand-new relationship. The cards might give a hard no or a maybe, but never a yes for happily ever after.
This took me a long time to learn. There are certainly cards that are optimistic for love and romance. Yet, those cards can reflect the new relationship energy as easily as they can make a happy prediction, and it is impossible to tell the difference between new relationship energy and lasting love, in the cards and in life.
Why is this?
It has to do with the magic of love itself. Something so magical is never entirely predictable. Beyond that, love cannot grow based on expectations and predictions. Love grows based on compatibility and choices. The cards can help us assess compatibility and make good choices. But if we believe there is some spiritual force holding us together, we won’t do the necessary work that will keep us together. And if a reader tells us that the Two of Cups that appeared a month into our relationship means that we are meant to be together, we may be confused and upset if that relationship ends a week later.

Hello, 2025!
Today, we welcome a New Year.
2025 is written in the sand, as a wave washes away 2024.
A new year dawns today.
We put a lot of energy into the New Year. We celebrate, predict, manifest, and set goals, intentions, and resolutions.
The New Year seems relatively arbitrary compared to special days in astrology or other, more ancient calendars. Yet, the New Year has power simply because we all agree to honor it.
Some approach the New Year with trepidation, anxious about what might await them. Others approach with optimism, determined to stay hopeful.
Whatever you feel about the onset of 2025, this New Year offers an opportunity to harness some hope, optimism, and celebration and direct that good energy toward your best desires for the year.
A New Year is here. Why not greet it with a hopeful heart?
We wish each other a Happy New Year, sometimes by rote. Let’s wish ourselves a Happy New Year and make it happen.

Greet the New Year with Tarot
Tarot is perfect for the New Year in so many ways. Of course, tarot readings are great entertainment at New Year parties!
Many people like to perform a serious reading at the beginning of each year. Some people like to create a unique spread for the New Year. Others use a traditional spread each year to look to the year ahead. For some, this is as simple as a card for each month.
New Year predictions can be fun, and New Year advice from the cards can prove helpful.
We can also do tarot magic for the New Year! What is it that you would like to have happen this year? Which energies do you need to cultivate?
Figure out which tarot cards embody those things and pull them from your deck. Spend time with them, recreate them in your chosen art form, put them on your altar, or sleep with them under your bed. You can even print out the card images and carry them with you.
Interacting with these images will help you create the year you want.
