Our Stories

As time passes, I realize how much I treasure the shared memories from longstanding friendships. Love and friendship can deepen over time, but there’s more. We are each other’s storykeepers. We help each other remember who we have always been and what we have accomplished.

Stories are so much a part of life. As a tarot reader, storytelling and storykeeping are a huge part of my life. I was reminded of this by a member of our digital village on YouTube during a recent livestream.

It makes sense to me, too, because I love to read novels. There is nothing like a good story to keep me entertained.

Stories are important to everyone, to some degree. As kids, we love to hear the stories of our infanthood. Our elders' stories can give us wisdom that might otherwise be lost to time. Yet, sometimes, we hang on to stories we tell ourselves or others have told us about ourselves. Those erroneous stories can keep us trapped in difficult situations and limit us.

To some extent, we can choose the story we tell ourselves about who we are, where we have been, and where we are going. We get lost when we cling to stories that keep us from seeing a hard truth or when we cannot see a happy story for our future.

We need to tell our own stories accurately and lovingly. Sometimes, we must choose a new perspective to tell our story more kindly. For example, many parents regret past decisions that affected their young children. At the very same time, it is clear that in each and every moment, those parents made the best decisions they knew how to make.

A good tarot reading can often help us reframe our perspective and find a better way to tell our story.

How we tell and process the stories of our past can greatly influence the stories we will be able to see and create for our future.

The Stories in the Cards

When we do a tarot reading, we look for the stories in the cards. An easy way to get better at this skill and learn the cards as a beginner is to find the stories inherent in the numerically ordered tarot deck.

One thing that separates tarot from other devices of random token divination is that tarot has specific sections, and within those sections is a specific order. This makes it easy to find stories based on numeric progression. We can look at each suit and find stories within the suit by looking at how the cards progress from one to ten or from ten to one. This encourages us to find a progression within the Court and add that story to the numbered cards, which helps us understand how those complex royal cards work.

When we play with the cards this way, we also discover that they can be organized in sets by number. Those sets help us understand the cards by finding commonality. For example, when we look at what all the fours have in common, we learn more about those cards.

When we study the cards by number, we learn the cards by finding the stories. When we find the stories in the deck, we get better at finding the stories in a reading.

Communities

One of the hardest things about losing an old friend or a family member is that when we lose them, we lose their stories. We lose the ability to ask them questions about their lives and their memories of us.

Perhaps that is why people are so interested in writing and reading memoirs. When we preserve our memories in writing, our stories become our legacy and can be shared with the greater community.

Writing a memoir, or creative writing in general, can be very healing and rewarding. And, although writing is typically a solitary activity, many writers’ groups meet in person and virtually to help support you on your journey.

Being part of a writers’ group can help us build creative community and help us become better writers.
