Happy Halloween!

This week we are finishing our big transition!

A tarot reading at a desk decorated for Halloween.

A tarot reading at a desk decorated for Halloween.

As many of you know, we are completing a significant transition this week. While I remain available for sessions, in person and virtual, by appointment, some of my usual offerings may be skipped, altered, or delayed, including this newsletter.

Tarot Topics will be back next week with all the usual features. Our regular YouTube Livestreams will continue as soon as we are able, or perhaps with continue with no interruption at all, depending on how the logistics work.

November TarotScopes may be a bit delayed.

Here is why this is happening.

The Palm City office has closed. I am now available by appointment at W Executive Suites in Stuart, Port Saint Lucie, and West Palm Beach.

I remain available for readings by phone, FaceTime, and Zoom.

I am excited for this opportunity to meet with more people in person at such convenient locations! Please call or text me at 561-655-1160 for more information and to make your appointment.

I am grateful for the five years we spent in Parkway Plaza in Palm City. Prior to the pandemic, we hosted the largest and last Holiday Open House, where more than twenty readers gave mini sessions in exchange for donations for the local food bank. We also had Ciro Marchetti come speak at our Grand Opening.

We enjoyed classes and gatherings before and after the shutdown. During the shutdown, the office served as a base of operations which allowed me to continue working with people virtually, and to plan and execute StaarCon, now in its fifth year.

Our monthly tarot meetup at Palm City Panera has grown over the years. We will continue to meet and nurture our local tarot community as always.

It is those of you who have sessions with me, attend classes, join our YouTube community, and attend events who made the Palm City office such a success, and have made possible these new opportunities for growth.

Thank you for your continued support of me and my work.

The Mask, and What Is Beneath

We all wear masks, even when it is not Halloween.

I have always loved Halloween. As a child, I loved dressing in costume and trick or treating in my neighborhood. As a younger adult, I loved costume contests and parties. I remember one Halloween my friends and I dressed in costume and took the train from New Haven to New York City to see a concert in the city. There is something exciting about being able to go to work, or ride a train, or go to a nightclub wearing something crazy that would not be acceptable on any other day.

As I got older, I learned the spiritual practices associated with October 31, and understood the origins of our Halloween traditions. I found meaning in these practices. Yet, I still love a good Halloween party, and I love a great costume.

There is something fun about pretending to be something, or someone, different than what we are. There is a freedom to act with other costumed people in ways that are different from our regular social interactions. Costumes allow us to play a role. Costumes can strengthen our confidence, since, in that moment, we are not being ourselves.

Yet, on the other 364 days of the year, many of pretend to be something different than we are. Sometimes we are hiding something about ourselves that we feel others cannot or will not accept. Sometimes we are hiding something about ourselves that we do not want to acknowledge or accept. Sometimes we truly do not know who we are, and so we pretend to be what we think we should be.

The metaphoric masks we wear day to day do not make us look like kitties or vampires or superheroes. Very often, when we mask our feelings and natural behaviors in an effort to fit in, we also diminish our own energy and personal power.

‘Social masking’ is a term that describe the behavior that neurodivergent people learn to fit in better with neurotypical people. Sometimes it is necessary to fit in. We have all heard the expression, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”.

Yet, if we find ourselves trying to diminish ourselves in order to fit in with others, we need to take a hard look at what is going on. Are we surrounded by people who will not understand us? Or are we simply afraid to be real and be vulnerable? Do we need to find people who are more like us? Or do we need to trust the people around us to accept us as we truly are?

Each situation is different. The important thing is that we each need to know our true selves, and we each need places and people that allow us to fully embrace who we are.

Join Us for Class Tonight!

Tonight, at 7 pm ET, I will present How Spirit Speaks Through Tarot on Zoom and in person in my Palm City office. It is not too late to sign up to attend!

This class is about how spirit speaks in a tarot reading, and what we can do to facilitate and manage this process. A tarot reading should always be an otherworldly experience. You may connect with a loved one in spirit. You may receive messages from spiritual beings, such as angels, saints, deities, guides, and guardians.

In this two-hour class you will learn how to hear the voice of spirit in a tarot reading, whether reading for yourself or others. You will learn to empower your readings with the presence of divine helpers, each and every time you pull a card.

Visit EventBrite to purchase your ticket.

The class will be available at cardandcraftacademy.com after November 2nd.

Tarot card Six of Cups against a brick background.

Guidance on the Journey

The Six of Cups is a card of happiness and pleasure. This card also represents nostalgia, childhood memories, and reunions. Some people see this as a card of past life connections and soul contracts.

The keyword from which all these various interpretations spring is ‘past’. The Six of Cups speaks of things from the past, and our memories and connections of the past.

As such, the Six of Cups can be a helpful reminder to be true to ourselves, and to know our true self, and present our true self to others.

Sometimes, when the Six of Cups appears, this card can be an admonition from the universe to remember who you are.

Remembering who you are is an essential exercise, especially as you age, and as you feel changed by life’s traumas.

Remembering who you are can allow you to align yourself with your moral compass and make the decision to do the right thing. Remembering who you are can remind you that you are strong and capable. Remembering who you are can offer a course correction, allowing you to follow your best path in life.

Spooky Stuff

At Halloween we learn to laugh at the things that scare us.

Halloween has so many facets to love and enjoy. For some people it is costumes and candy. For others it’s a party. For others it is a time of spiritual renewal and communion with the ancestors.

No matter how you celebrate Halloween, one aspect of the holiday that seems constant is the focus on the spooky and the macabre. In many ways, Halloween is a time to laugh at the things that scare us. What is interesting is that things that aren’t real, like zombies, get mixed in with things that are very real, like death.

Halloween allows us to laugh at our own mortality. Halloween allows us to make fun of the things that scare us most.

Some people find tarot scary, generally based on misinformation and misguidance. During Halloween curious seekers will often try a reading in the spirit of the holiday. As much as I hate being asked to wear a ‘fortune teller costume’, I appreciate the opportunity to share tarot with those who do not know much about it.

One thing we can learn from Halloween is that courage comes from laughter and play. When we make a game about the things that scare us, we gain power over our fear. When we can laugh at the harsh truths, we can find joy in the current moment. That joy is much more productive and healing than living in dread of what may come in the future.

The StaarCorner

As you probably know, one of the missions of StaarCon is to honor our deck artists and designers. This is why we are very excited to feature Claire Lily, the designer of the brand-new Aunt Lily’s Tarot.

Our new episode of StaarCast feature a conversation with Claire Lily. Learn how this delightful new deck came to be. Get a sneak peek at what Claire will be teaching at StaarCon.

You can watch the video or listen wherever you get your podcasts.

Join Us for Class Tomorrow!

There is still time to get your ticket for our hybrid class, Tarot for Magic and Mediumship, to be held Thursday, October 28, from 7 pm and 9 pm ET.

The class will be held in person in my Palm City office, and online on Zoom.

In this class we will explore the multi-facetted nature of tarot. You will learn ways to use tarot to communicate with those in spirit, and to work with the Universe to manifest your desires and to bring healing to your life.

How Not to Be Scared by a Tarot Reading

Have you ever had a tarot reading that scared you? Sometimes readings are unnerving because of the uncanny ways the cards can speak truth.

Sometimes readings scare us because they call our attention to problems we did not want to see or address.

Sometimes a predictive reading is scary because it presents an outcome that is different than what we had hoped.

Some tarot cards have difficult images and words associated with them. Sometimes people are afraid to see these cards, even though their meanings are not as upsetting as their image.

There are a few things we can actively do to remove fear from tarot.

First, the more you understand the cards and the symbols on the cards, the less frightening they seem. Tarot study is key.

Second, we must recognize that whatever is presented in a reading is there to help us. Knowing is better than not knowing.

Third, when it comes to future prediction, there are often things we can do to change or mitigate something that shows up in the cards. In this way, tarot can help us have better outcomes, rather than scaring us with inevitable negative potential.

The bottom line is this. Tarot helps us be proactive in our lives. If we are proactive in our tarot understanding, tarot will always make life better for us. That is nothing to fear!

The Week in Review

Because of the Tarot Poetry Workshop, there has a been a lot of focus on my Seventy-eight Poems Project. You can see how far I have gotten in my goal of writing a poem for each of the seventy-eight cards in the Waite Smith Tarot. Will I ever finish it? Maybe. In any case, it is a fun work in progress.

Did you catch the Tarot Meetup on YouTube last night? You can watch it in archive if you missed it, or want to review it.

Here is a Halloween Tarot Spread to help you celebrate.

I struggled with the spelling of ‘Halloween’. Here is what I learned about the origin of the word.

The Day of the Dead is not ‘Mexican Halloween’. Here is some information about Día de los Muertos.

Cards for Your Consideration

We professional readers often joke that everyone loves tarot at Halloween! There are even Halloween-themed tarot, oracle, and Lenormand decks.

I kind of bristle at the idea that Halloween is the only time of year appropriate for tarot.

Yes, those who celebrate Halloween as a spiritual holiday, and those who understand the origins of Halloween, know that now is the best time to connect with our ancestors and loved ones in spirit. Yet, as one who does readings every single day of the year, I rail against the idea that important spiritual seeking should be relegated to just a single day.

Whether in seriousness or fun, let us consider divination, cartomancy, and psychic development at this spooky time. Yet, let us also consider that seeking wisdom can be a daily, weekly, or monthly activity. We have the tools and the ability to connect with spirit, to answer questions, and to seek truth whenever the need arises.

Are You Comfortable?

A helpful tarot exercise and some great new events!

comfortable.jpg

Are You Comfortable?

Sometimes it's good not to be.

I think most of us value comfort quite highly. There are plenty of ways that comfort truly is important. My shoes must be always be comfortable. In fact, all my clothing needs to make me feel great. I want my friends, clients and students to be comfortable in my office. I want to feel comfortable driving my car.

Comfort can be an issue in terms of ethics as well. Going outside of one’s ethics should make one very uncomfortable.

We often speak of the “comfort zone” in both positive and negative ways. We want our friends to be comfortable with us, we want home to be a beloved comfort zone. However, we also know that sometimes the comfort zone is a trap that keeps us from our success.

There are plenty of things that are good for us to do that aren’t always comfortable. Yoga, exercise, study, and learning new things often drive us out of our comfort zones, and toward success.

Sometimes we stay in relationships that don’t serve us because we are too comfortable to leave. Sometimes, when people come from dysfunctional backgrounds, they find comfort in partnering with people who have the same dysfunction. This never works out well.

Our feelings of comfort and discomfort can be like an antenna to help us sense danger. The problem is that in some situations discomfort indicates danger. In other situations, it’s comfort that become dangerous.

Sometimes the things that make us uncomfortable are the very things we need to do.

Pushing out of the comfort zone toward new ways of being healthy and successful isn’t easy, but very often it is the only way to reach our goals.

Out of the Comfort Zone with the Tarot Fives!

Tarot has much to teach us about getting out of the comfort zone. While some cards, like the Nine and Ten of Pentacles, can speak of comfort, other cards, like the Fool, encourage us to throw caution to the wind and take a leap of Faith.

One great lesson comes from the progression of Four-Five-Six in each suit, including the Major Arcana.

As an exercise, look at this three-card progression in all five places it appears. In each case, this is what you will see.

Four is always a comfort zone. Five is what happens when we leave that comfort zone. It’s expansive, and not always comfortable. Six is the place of victory.

If we are never willing to sustain the discomfort of the Five, we will stay in our comfort zone forever, and never reach the success of the Six.

Look at each of these progressions. Do you see stories of your own life here? Do these cards give you courage to get out of your comfort zone and take the uncomfortable leap toward success? Which suit’s story resonates for you most? What advice and lessons do you see in these cards?

The Week in Review

This week I am happy to welcome a new guest blogger to my Community Blog. Read this great article about one of my favorite topics; how astrology and tarot work together.

From Around the Web

While Halloween is over, the spiritual energy of this special day lasts for a few weeks, allowing us a time to connect with our departed loved ones in spirit more easily than at other times of the year.

This week I am sharing three of my favorite posts from this Halloween to help you make that connection over this next week.

First, a poem from Robin Renee.

Next, from Kimberly Essex, thoughts on how to use tarot to communicate with loved ones in spirit.

Finally, from Marcus Katz, a tarot spell for Halloween.

This is an important time of year for diviners and magical people. Many of us take time to share our thoughts, and our craft, online. Of all the offerings I saw this year, these were my favorites. I hope you like them too!
