Spooky Stuff

Halloween has so many facets to love and enjoy. For some people it is costumes and candy. For others it’s a party. For others it is a time of spiritual renewal and communion with the ancestors.

No matter how you celebrate Halloween, one aspect of the holiday that seems constant is the focus on the spooky and the macabre. In many ways, Halloween is a time to laugh at the things that scare us. What is interesting is that things that aren’t real, like zombies, get mixed in with things that are very real, like death.

Halloween allows us to laugh at our own mortality. Halloween allows us to make fun of the things that scare us most.

Some people find tarot scary, generally based on misinformation and misguidance. During Halloween curious seekers will often try a reading in the spirit of the holiday. As much as I hate being asked to wear a ‘fortune teller costume’, I appreciate the opportunity to share tarot with those who do not know much about it.

One thing we can learn from Halloween is that courage comes from laughter and play. When we make a game about the things that scare us, we gain power over our fear. When we can laugh at the harsh truths, we can find joy in the current moment. That joy is much more productive and healing than living in dread of what may come in the future.

The StaarCorner

As you probably know, one of the missions of StaarCon is to honor our deck artists and designers. This is why we are very excited to feature Claire Lily, the designer of the brand-new Aunt Lily’s Tarot.

Our new episode of StaarCast feature a conversation with Claire Lily. Learn how this delightful new deck came to be. Get a sneak peek at what Claire will be teaching at StaarCon.

You can watch the video or listen wherever you get your podcasts.

Join Us for Class Tomorrow!

There is still time to get your ticket for our hybrid class, Tarot for Magic and Mediumship, to be held Thursday, October 28, from 7 pm and 9 pm ET.

The class will be held in person in my Palm City office, and online on Zoom.

In this class we will explore the multi-facetted nature of tarot. You will learn ways to use tarot to communicate with those in spirit, and to work with the Universe to manifest your desires and to bring healing to your life.

How Not to Be Scared by a Tarot Reading

Have you ever had a tarot reading that scared you? Sometimes readings are unnerving because of the uncanny ways the cards can speak truth.

Sometimes readings scare us because they call our attention to problems we did not want to see or address.

Sometimes a predictive reading is scary because it presents an outcome that is different than what we had hoped.

Some tarot cards have difficult images and words associated with them. Sometimes people are afraid to see these cards, even though their meanings are not as upsetting as their image.

There are a few things we can actively do to remove fear from tarot.

First, the more you understand the cards and the symbols on the cards, the less frightening they seem. Tarot study is key.

Second, we must recognize that whatever is presented in a reading is there to help us. Knowing is better than not knowing.

Third, when it comes to future prediction, there are often things we can do to change or mitigate something that shows up in the cards. In this way, tarot can help us have better outcomes, rather than scaring us with inevitable negative potential.

The bottom line is this. Tarot helps us be proactive in our lives. If we are proactive in our tarot understanding, tarot will always make life better for us. That is nothing to fear!

The Week in Review

Because of the Tarot Poetry Workshop, there has a been a lot of focus on my Seventy-eight Poems Project. You can see how far I have gotten in my goal of writing a poem for each of the seventy-eight cards in the Waite Smith Tarot. Will I ever finish it? Maybe. In any case, it is a fun work in progress.

Did you catch the Tarot Meetup on YouTube last night? You can watch it in archive if you missed it, or want to review it.

From Around the Web

Here is a Halloween Tarot Spread to help you celebrate.

I struggled with the spelling of ‘Halloween’. Here is what I learned about the origin of the word.

The Day of the Dead is not ‘Mexican Halloween’. Here is some information about Día de los Muertos.

Cards for Your Consideration

We professional readers often joke that everyone loves tarot at Halloween! There are even Halloween-themed tarot, oracle, and Lenormand decks.

I kind of bristle at the idea that Halloween is the only time of year appropriate for tarot.

Yes, those who celebrate Halloween as a spiritual holiday, and those who understand the origins of Halloween, know that now is the best time to connect with our ancestors and loved ones in spirit. Yet, as one who does readings every single day of the year, I rail against the idea that important spiritual seeking should be relegated to just a single day.

Whether in seriousness or fun, let us consider divination, cartomancy, and psychic development at this spooky time. Yet, let us also consider that seeking wisdom can be a daily, weekly, or monthly activity. We have the tools and the ability to connect with spirit, to answer questions, and to seek truth whenever the need arises.
