Miracles and Celebrations

This is the season of miracles, and a time to celebrate!

Beach scene of Christmas candles and seaside decor with ornaments on a wooden background.

Whatever, wherever, and however you celebrate this time of year, my family and I wish you the best of the season.

The traditions we observe, the people we visit, and the things we enjoy during this time can bring a variety of feelings, including joy, contemplation, hope, nostalgia, and even grief.

We think of this as a season for miracles. Sometimes a miracle is a small moment of calm in a raging storm, sometimes a miracle is an opening for something new, sometimes a miracle is a wish fulfilled.

For me, sometimes life itself feels miraculous. At this time of year, perhaps more than any other, it is easy to see how far we have come, what has changed, and what has endured.

Celebration is as amorphous a concept as miracles. A celebration can be a formal party, a gathering of friends, or a simple private moment of appreciation.

I wish you all the miracles of the season. I celebrate your presence in my life and work.

Multi-Day Tarot Practices

At this time of year there are several multi-day holiday celebrations. Hanukah is eight nights. There are twelve days of Christmas, beginning December 26 and ending January 6. There are seven days of Kwanzaa, beginning December 26 and ending January 1.

It is easy to imagine a daily tarot practice during these sorts of sacred times. You could pull one card a day and focus on the card to help you understand the spiritual energy of that day.

Tarot is a natural addition to any season of celebration!

I am so excited that Benebell Wen will be publishing book called I Ching, The Oracle: A Practical Guide to the Book of Changes early in 2023. I Ching was the first divination tool I took seriously. I am sure that Benebell’s book will be fabulous! I am hoping that it will inspire me to return to some I Ching readings.

Guidance on the Journey

There are two specific tarot cards I think about when I think about celebrations. They are the Three of Cups and the Four of Wands.

What are the differences and similarities of these cards?

Both can indicate gathering with friends and family. Both can indicate specific fun events. Both can speak of creativity and inspiration. Both cards can predict good fortune.

The Three of Cups can sometimes speak of over-indulgence.

The Four of Wands is the traditional card of marriage, and can indicate an engagement, a wedding announcement or invitation.

When we look at the associations for each card, we see the subtle differences between the two.

Three is the number of production. That is, something is or has been created. Cups is the element of Water, so is related to emotions and relationships.

The Three of Cups, then, can be about creating time with people who matter to you.

Four is the number of stability. Wands is related to Fire, which is creativity and passion. With the Four of Wands we can see the hearth-fire, the happy home and family.

When we look at these two cards in this way, we can see the Three of Cups perhaps referring more to gatherings with friends, while the Four of Wands might more often refer to family celebrations.

Needs and Wants

What is the source of greed? Perhaps greed happens when our needs are not being met.

A friend asked me an interesting question recently. If we have all that we need, why pursue wants?

This brings up some important concerns about spirituality which promotes greed and focuses on good fortune as proof of spiritual worthiness and favor. Yet, even when greed is not a factor, our needs transcend the physical.

In modern psychology, the standard for understanding of human needs is Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.

Maslow’s Hierarchy is usually pictured as a pyramid. Basic needs are at the bottom. The theory is that the basic needs must be filled before more esoteric needs can be addressed.

There are five levels of needs in Maslow’s original thesis. The first is physiological needs, like food and shelter. The second is safety needs, like security and resources. The third is love and belonging, the fourth is esteem. The final is self-actualization, which is the need to be the most and best that we can be. That is, to fulfill our potential.

Maslow ultimately extended his hierarchy to include three more levels. Cognitive needs, such as learning and research, and aesthetic needs, such as appreciation of art, beauty, and nature, are place between esteem and self-actualization.

The final level that is added after self-actualization is transcendence, which is spiritual pursuit and experience.

For me, this revised hierarchy feels more valid and inclusive than the first and answers my friend’s question quite precisely.

Once our basic needs are addressed, we have a natural desire to pursue knowledge, thought, beauty, understanding, creativity and spirituality.

We may categorize these things as wants rather than needs. Yet, truly, these pleasurable, intellectual, and esoteric pursuits are our human needs. They are not as basic and urgent as food and shelter, but they are still needs.

The moral imperative is to distinguish between need and greed. It takes more than basic resources to address these higher needs. We must have the discipline and insight to know when our needs are fulfilled, and to be satisfied.

If we are insatiable, it is because another need, such as esteem, belonging, or love, has not been filled.

Jason will be presenting his new tarot deck at StaarCon, and will also teach a workshop especially for professional tarot readers, and those who aspire to read professionally.

Join us at StaarCon 2022! Tickets are available now. You can join in person or online.

Maslow’s Tarot Spread

Could we make a tarot spread of Maslow’s revised pyramid? Perhaps each of the eight levels could have two cards. The first card could speak of how our needs are being met at this level, and the second could suggest an action to preserve or attain this need.

Or, we might want to have a single card at each level. That card could check in on what we are doing right now to address these needs, or what we need to do.

The eight levels, from bottom to top, in order, are Physiological, Safety, Belonging and Love, Esteem, Cognitive, Aesthetic, Self- Actualization, Transcendence.

Play with this and see what you come up with, and how it works for you!

Guidance on the Journey

The Four of Pentacles typically shows a person holding tightly to their four coins. Classic interpretations for this card include greed, miserly behavior, selfishness, and an unnecessary fear of loss and lack.

This is a card that is sometimes used to shame people by accusing them of holding on to a “lack mentality”. While the Four of Pentacles does sometimes appear to describe a belief of scarcity, this is not the only possible meaning for this card.

The Four of Pentacles has a lot more depth than many people realize.

The Four of Pentacles can tell you to have good boundaries, and to practice good self-care.

The Four of Pentacles can ask you to conserve your resources.

The Four of Pentacles can ask you to consider what you want, and what you need, and to measure that against what you now have.

The Four of Pentacles may warn against a controlling relationship.

The Four of Pentacles may describe a stubborn mindset around desires and resources.

When you see the Four of Pentacles, consider all the possibilities for this card, and see what healing this card may offer you.

Allowing Happiness

We can give ourselves permission to be happy without guilt. We must know that happiness can coexist with sorrow.

Beatiful mature woman in red dress

We all know so many proverbs about happiness. Some feel trite, others feel like deep wisdom. When know that happiness is an inside job. We know that happiness is the byproduct of a life well-lived. We know we have the right to pursue happiness.

One thing that is true about happiness that we do not often hear is that we must give ourselves permission to be happy. To be happy, we must allow ourselves to be happy. This can be difficult for so many reasons.

We must allow ourselves to be happy when our circumstances are not what we want them to be. We must allow ourselves to be happy as we recover from grief and loss. We must allow ourselves to be happy even if others around us are not happy.

Another truth about happiness is that it sometimes comes in single moments. We might have a moment of happiness followed by a moment of grief followed by a moment of frustration. We humans are multi-dimensional. We can hold space for many kinds of feelings all at once. Sometimes those feelings seem to contradict each other.

The way to be happy in the midst of sorrow is to allow your happiness and your sorrow to coexist within you.

Sometimes we feel guilty for allowing our own happiness. Of all the feelings we must experience, and all the feelings we should allow, guilt is usually misplaced. No matter the situation, we all deserve a few moments of happiness in our lives.

On a spiritual level, the ability to be happy in a difficult world may be a purpose of our human existence. Finding happiness is a step toward spiritual enlightenment.

Allowing Happiness with Tarot

So often when we are upset, we will say “How can I be happy when this has happened?”

This is a perfect sort of question to ask tarot.

When you are seeking your happiness, processing grief, or dealing with upset, tell it to your cards! Ask your cards questions that will help you to process your feelings and allow happiness.

The very process of formulating questions for the cards can help you get a handle on your feelings. Contemplating the images of the cards you draw can help you understand your feelings, and access your inner joy.

Guidance on the Journey

Which tarot cards specifically speak of happiness? The Sun can be a card of joy and success. The Star and the Nine of Cups can speak of wishes fulfilled. The Three of Cups and the Four of Wands can speak of celebration. The Six of Wands speaks of Victory. The Ten of Cups can be about a happy family.

Is there a particular card that makes you think of happiness?

That so many cards can speak of things that make us happy suggests to me that there are many roads toward happiness, and many things in which we can find joy and satisfaction.

There are many flavors of happiness. The feeling of victory in the Six of Wands is very different than the party we see in the Three of Cups, for example.

When we compare and contrast the different ways happiness appears in the cards, we understand the nuances of tarot, as well as different aspects of happiness.

Building Community

When we gather with like-minded people, we grow as individuals, and as a community.

A woman striking a drum

The word ‘community’ can mean many different things. We have online communities and neighborhood communities and business communities.

When we speak of building community, we are usually referring to a community of like-minded people who can offer one another support, encouragement, and inspiration.

We build community when we reach out to one another, spend time together, and share ideas and resources.

To be in community with one another we do not always need to agree or see things exactly the same way. We simply need to be willing to treat each other with respect and listen to one another.

Sometimes participating in community can feel like a chore. Yet, the rewards of building community are always worth the effort.

One of the primary reasons we hold tarot and divination conferences is to gather, celebrate, and build community. StaarCon is a unique community builder because we gather in person and online.

Truly, everyone who reads tarot is a part of ‘the tarot community.’ Very often, people do not realize there is a world-wide community of tarot enthusiasts. I remember the joy I felt at my very first tarot conference in the late 1990s. For the very first time, I was surrounded by people who seemed very much like me.
Make sure you mark your calendar for January 20 through 22, 2023. Whether you join us in person or online, you will feel inspired by, and connected to, our StaarCon community.

Building Local Tarot Community

Wherever you live, chances are you have an opportunity to build local tarot community. Everywhere, there are people who are curious about tarot, people who used to play with the cards and want to get back into it, and people who use the cards regularly.

You can use social media platforms to organize an event. You do not need to be an expert or a professional in order to create tarot community. You only need to enjoy the exploration of tarot within a group setting.

There are many books and websites that offer ideas for group tarot activities appropriate for all levels of experience.

You can hold group meetings in cafes, restaurants, libraries, and other public spaces. When you do, you will learn more about tarot, and you will make new friends.

What the Court Cards Want You to Know

On Wednesday, June 29, 7 pm to 9 pm, join us for a hybrid tarot class about the tarot Court cards. You can attend in Person in Palm City or online on Zoom.

The sixteen Court cards, typically called Pages, Knights, Queens and Kings, can be some of the most confusing cards in the tarot deck.

This is because these cards are very versatile. They can reference the people around you. They can also reference parts of yourself. They can behave like any other tarot card and offer advice, comment, and prediction.

In this two-hour class you will learn easy ways to understand and work with these sixteen cards.

You can join us in person or online. Every student will receive access to a recording of the class. Visit EventBrite to purchase your ticket.

The class will be available at cardandcraftacademy.com after July 8th.

Tarot card Three of Cups on a flowery cloth

Guidance on the Journey

Which tarot cards can speak of community? My favorite is the Three of Cups, perhaps because of my personal preference for communities that include song and dance.

The Four of Wands, though traditionally a card about weddings, can also refer to community gatherings.

I sometimes see the Emperor as a reference to community leadership.

A tarot reading might reference community for many different reasons. Sometimes there are stressful community issues that we need to sort out. Sometimes we need to assess what our role should be within a community, or whether a community is the right place to be. Sometimes a tarot reading might encourage us to find our community because we need a sense of support, and people with whom we feel connection.
