The Element of Earth

On April 20th the Sun entered the fixed Earth sign of Taurus. Happy Birthday, Tauruns!

On April 22nd we celebrated Earth Day.  It seems like exactly the right time to explore the element of Earth here at Tarot Topics!

Metaphysically, we see the Earth element as being the force that grounds us and sustains us. “Earth energy” is the energy that helps us survive, that provides our resources and that allows us to handle the practical and material matters in life.

In tarot, Earth energy is expressed in the suit of Pentacles (Disks, Coins), as well as in the Major Arcana Cards the Empress, the Hierophant, the Hermit, the Devil and the World.

Often, we see the Earth energy as being so practical and material that we forget Earth is also spiritual.

On Earth Day, we remember (as we must remember every day) the importance of our natural environment, and our responsibility to sustain the wellbeing of the planet.

Metaphysically, Earth is what sustains our physical wellbeing.

Let’s remember and celebrate our connection to planet Earth!

Earth Day and the World Card

In Tarot, Major Arcana 21, The World, is the final card in the Major Arcana. In some traditions this card is also called “The Universe.”

Tarot is constantly evolving. One of the newer ideas we have seen in modern tarot is the idea that the World card can indicate a focus on environmentalism and conservation of natural resources. The World card can remind us to think globally. It says that we are all connected on the planet, and all responsible to the planet.

Many of us are frustrated and concerned that we don’t protect the Earth enough. Sometimes the World card might come up in a reading to express that frustration.

As well as a tool of divination, tarot is also a tool of manifestation. If you care about the planet and are concerned for our environment, please join me in using the World card to manifest healing for our planet, and a renewed commitment to wise environmental management.

Simply visualize our world more in balance. See world powers making a strong commitment to the wellbeing of the planet, and understanding that our wellbeing depends on it.

As you hold this vision, focus on the World card. Use the energy of this card to send your vision across the planet and gain strength as it combines with the similar vision of others.

Together, our energy is powerful. When we unite using a simple tarot image and a clear vision, we have the ability to manifest the vision of a healthy planet that sustains us in harmony.

The Week in Review

Inspired by the “Tarot and Kindness” episode of Christiana’s Psychic Café, I wrote a bit more about kindness on my Dark Forest Blog. What’s one hard thing you could do to practice kindness? Here’s mine.

On my personal blog I wrote about a serious issue of concern to many tarotists.  Read “Tarot, Psychic Addiction and Emotional Illness: The Balance between Free Will and Fate.”

On my Tarot Topics Community Blog I posted another “Answers to your Question about Tarot” video. This week the question is about reading for Eeyore.

From Around the Web

I absolutely love this post on MindBodyGreen! Read “7 Non-New Agey Affirmations To Balance Your Chakras.”

Arwen Lynch Poe shared a really helpful post on her “Tarot Templates” blog on PaganSquare. If you are a tarot student, you will love “Tarot Answering Machine.”

Olivia Destrades of First Earth Tarot wrote about free will this week, too. Check out her Lenormand reading, what it predicted, what happened and what Olivia thought about it. Read No Exchange for You!: Fortune Telling and Free Will.

It's not all About the Money

We’ve all heard that money makes the world go ‘round. In tarot, the suit associated with the element of Earth, and therefore money, is the Pentacles, also known as disks, stones and coins.

When reading tarot, many of us are inclined to make the Pentacles cards always be about money. I think when we do that we are giving the Pentacles, and the element of Earth, short shrift.

The Pentacles cards can address all aspects of Earth energy, including groundedness, stability, health, home, work and other material concerns.

Many of us also have a tendency to decide that the Pentacles are not terribly spiritual. Their material nature makes them seem more mundane than sacred.

I think we need to find the sacred in the mundane. That’s what the Hermetic wisdom “As Above, So Below” is about. Our bodies are sacred. Our work is sacred. Our food is sacred. That’s something we can learn from the Earth energy.

When I think about the element of Earth from an environmental perspective, I am struck that the excuse we use to destroy our environment is financial. We need the jobs, we need the fuel, and we can’t afford to operate in a more sustainable way.

The element of Earth requires us to nurture and protect our resources. To create financial resources at the risk of our ultimate resource makes no sense.

The Earth element teaches us to honor money as an important resource, in balance with other important resources. We need to do this on a planetary scale, but also on a personal scale. This happens when we strive to have a good work/life balance, and when we value our time and our wellbeing as resources that are equal in importance to financial wealth.

As an exercise, look through your suit of Pentacles. Here you may see images of people working, learning, gardening, sharing and enjoying resources. Can you see that money is only one of the resources valued in this suit?

Now, shuffle all 78 cards. Pull one card to answer each of these two questions.

What more can I do to create the resources I need?

What more can I do to value and honor all my resources equally?

What’s Up at the Psychic Café?

On Easter Sunday we enjoyed an encore presentation of an episode featuring Freedom Facilitator Marina Bajszar. Marina joined me for a fun and informative conversation about her private practice, which includes FasterEFT uniquely combined with other modalities. Marina led us in an EFT exercise and shared with us ways to release the things that hold us back in order to be truly free.

We also watched what happens when Hoop So Fly descends on a local gathering with hoops for all, and enjoyed a song by Robin Renee.

You can watch the show in archive on the Tarot Topics news site.

Our scheduled guest for this coming Sunday has had to reschedule, so instead we will air our show from May 12th featuring energy healer Hillary Gauvreau. This was our Mother’s Day show from last year, and will get us ready for Mother’s Day 2014!

The show features some fabulous insights into healing, and running a metaphysical business.

Learning Tarot: Eight of Wands

In the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot, the Eight of Wands is one of the few cards that has no human image on it. What we see is eight wands flying through the air. They are all going in the same direction. We can’t see where they are coming from or where they are going to, but it looks like they are coming in for a landing.

This card often reminds me of the expression, “Run it up the flagpole and see who salutes.” Sometimes you can’t know how something is going to be received until you do it.

I also see the concept of seed-planting in this card. Put it in the ground and see what grows!

Typically in tarot the number eight deals with motion. In the Eight of Wands, motion and movement is the most prominent energy. That Wands are related to the fast-moving Fire energy adds to the speed depicted by this card.

The Eight of Wands often acts as the adverb “swiftly” or adjective “fast” in a reading.  How will something happen? Swiftly! When should you do this? Quickly! When will something happen? Soon!

Another traditional interpretation for the Eight of Wands is “receiving a message.” This card can predict that you will receive important news very soon.

Next week we will explore the Nine of Wands.

Your One-Card Weekly Reading

Your one-card weekly reading is the Seven of Swords.

Traditionally known as “The Thieves’ Card,” the Seven of Swords discusses treachery, dishonesty and trust.

This card asks you to evaluate your integrity. Are you acting in a trustworthy manner? What about the people around you?  Do you surround yourself with trustworthy people?

The Seven of Swords reminds us that sometimes we need to be crafty to get things done, but we need to be clear about our ethical boundaries.

Sometimes we don’t trust ourselves when we should. Sometimes we fail to trust the Universe.

This week, focus on the concept of trust. Trust yourself. Trust your higher power. Be trustworthy.
