How Spirit Speaks

How can we discern the voice of spirit?

A cellphone displays an angel number.

A cellphone displays an angel number.

I would not have predicted that the digital age, social media, and information technology would make people more interested in hearing guidance from spirit, but here we are.

Digital clocks allow us to see “angel numbers” and other numeric synchronicities. Short-form videos on social media offer daily advice on how to feel more spiritually guided.

Most of us believe or want to believe that we have some sort of unseen guidance available to us. The nature of that guidance may differ according to belief systems or circumstances.

I believe that we can receive guidance from loved ones in spirit, ancestors, angels, guides, and guardians.

Sometimes, guidance comes to us spontaneously, through a thought, an experience, or a dream. Sometimes, we seek guidance through meditation and divination.

There is always the danger that we might believe something to be the infallible word of a higher power when, in fact, it is only a poorly interpreted oracle card or some digits on our device.

It makes sense to take a nuanced approach to all things spiritual. The signs and synchronicities we see in our daily lives might confirm some truths for us, but only if other practical evidence is also available.

When we feel something strongly, we might believe that what we are feeling is our intuition or a psychic download. The truth is that strong emotions fuel magic but are usually not indicative of intuition. While we might read the intense emotions of others, we must stay detached and neutral as much as possible when discerning messages from spirit.

Spirit speaks in riddles. Spirit speaks in whispers. Spirit speaks in metaphors.

When Bible-thumping pastors yell to their congregations that they are sure of God’s will because God spoke to them personally, we can be sure they are mistaking their own will and ego for that of a higher power.

It takes work to hear the voice of spirit and time and contemplation to understand the message. We sometimes have quick, profound flashes of intuition or clear psychic vision. But even then, the meaning of our experience will become clearer with consideration.

It is comforting to see signs of spirit all around us. At the same time, we must take responsibility for our own decisions and actions. We appreciate guidance and insight, and we know that true spiritual wisdom involves using our free will. Ego, fear, greed, and rigid thinking can limit our ability to hear the voice of spirit.

Mediumship in Tarot

Mediumship happens easily in tarot readings in several ways. Sometimes, a loved one in spirit will use the tarot reading as an opportunity to pop in and say hi. We will see our deceased loved ones in the cards and take it as a reminder of their continued love and presence.

We can also ask the cards to give us information about our loved ones in spirit. While there are many protocols and spreads for this, tarot mediumship, in its simplest form, is like any other tarot reading. Ask the question, pull the cards, and read the cards in the context of the question.

What is interesting is how quickly you will feel the presence of the loved one guiding your interpretations. Sometimes, it feels that doing the reading serves as an invitation to our loved ones to come and spend a moment with us in sacred space.

From Around the Web

There are many tarot spreads we can use to connect with loved ones in spirit, angels, ancestors, and guides. We can also design spreads for this purpose.

Here are some spreads I found for us to try!

From Emerald Lotus, a Conversation with a Loved One.

The Hermit’s Mirror has a spread based on the Ten of Pentacles for working with ancestors.

New Age Hipster offers us an Advice from Archangels Spread.

Making Magic

What magic supports mediumship?

I can consider two possibilities. One is the magic of invocation, where we call upon a spirit, angel, or elemental to be present with us. Most church services begin with a prayer of invocation, asking God to be present for the service and in the hearts of the congregants.

Wiccan circles begin with an invocation to each of the Four Elements, asking that the spirits of Earth, Air, Fire, and Water each bring their blessings to the circle and to those assembled.

Some believe that strong magic of invocation can draw the spirit of a departed loved one and command their presence. I don’t necessarily believe this, but I certainly cannot speak to what is possible or not. I do know that we can perform simple invocation magic to assist in communicating with a loved one in spirit. Perhaps the simplest way to do that is to have a photo of that person or something they loved, like a bouquet of their favorite flowers or a pot of their favorite tea.

Another sort of magic to support mediumship would be magic to become a better listener. For example, meditation to open the third eye and the crown chakra would help enhance psychic ability.

Herbs like mugwort, lavender, and sandalwood can be burned or worn as oils to help deepen the ability to listen to the voice of spirit.

The Only Constant

This week, we are talking about the inevitability of change.

The life cycle of a butterfly.

The life cycle of a butterfly.

Years ago, I worked for a radio station. I knew something big had happened when, upon walking in one morning, I saw that an inspirational poster had been hung in a prominent spot. It read, “The Only Constant is Change”. I discovered there had been a huge personnel change overnight. At that moment, I thought the poster was a cheesy attempt to motivate us during a difficult time. In retrospect, I must admit that I have used that phrase to motivate myself countless times over the years after first seeing it that day.

We spiritual people talk about change all the time. We want to shift, transform, transmute, and evolve. We want personal change and social change. We want metamorphosis. We know that when we say that change is the only constant, we are also saying that a refusal to change leaves us stuck.

Change comes in two forms: the changes we choose and the changes that are forced upon us.

Sometimes, we forget that change, though necessary, is always hard. Even when we choose a carefully thought-out evolution, there may be grief, fear, guilt, and regret.

When change comes against our will, it can be even worse. Then, we must either accept or resist. Often, we resist at first and then slowly accept the inevitable.

Everything in nature is designed to change, including we humans. Yet, we get comfortable in what we know, even when what we know isn’t what we want.

To embrace change, we must embrace discomfort. We must also embrace the fact that resisting change will bring even more discomfort in the long run.

Closeup of the Wheel of Fortune tarot card.

Two Cards of Change

One of the first things we learn as beginning tarot students is not to fear Major Arcana 13, “The Death Card.” We are taught that while the lesson of Death is to accept all the cycles of nature, when Death appears in divination, it is likely discussing a change, such as a new job, marriage, or pregnancy, rather than a tragedy.

Death may appear to invite us to explore the feelings we have about our mortality and that of our loved ones.

Another card that speaks of change is the Wheel of Fortune. The Wheel of Fortune speaks to us of luck, fate, patterns, and karma. Yet, Major Arcana 10, the Wheel of Fortune, can also talk about the turn of the wheel that creates a change in your fortune. When upright, the change is desired. When reversed or ill-dignified, it may be a change you wouldn’t have asked for.

When we see the Wheel of Fortune as a card of change, we see the change as very likely unavoidable and likely caused by something outside of our influence. Death, too, will often speak of the changes we cannot avoid and did not create.

Which cards, then, speak of the changes we choose?

I think many of the Swords cards speak of our choices, as do a few Cups cards.

I have heard that some people see the Major Arcana, in general, as things that can’t be changed and the Minor Arcana as things over which we have influence. I bristle against this sweeping limitation. Yet, it is true that when we speak about change, the Major Arcana cards that address the energy of change do seem to talk about external influences, while the Minor Arcana cards do seem to indicate that we can make choices about the changes happening.

Making Magic

Do we ever perform magic to create significant change? I think sometimes we do, but it is usually for something specific, such as fertility magic to assist in becoming pregnant or money magic to assist in finding a new job.

Sometimes, we have the need for change but don’t know what change we want. I think it could be dangerous to manifest unspecified change. Here, I think it is better to ask for direction.

Divination is great magic for finding direction, but so is meditation. When we open our minds to the universe and ask for nothing other than a push in the right direction, positive change can come quickly!

Tricks and Treats

When we say that someone is haunted, very rarely do we mean to imply that they are having ghostly visitations. Rather, we are haunted by our memories and the injuries of our past. This week, we are putting those old ghosts to rest.

Children in costume trick or treating.

Not surprisingly, I love the spiritual and secular aspects of spooky season. I also love discovering the origins of all our holiday traditions. For example, the tradition of trick-or-treating originated from the custom of leaving sweets on doorsteps to placate the spirits who came back to seek vengeance on Halloween.

We humans often try to bargain with the energies we see as spiritual forces. That bargaining is something I think about often.

This week, though, I am contemplating the metaphor of appeasing our ghosts.

Beyond the concept of ghosts as actual spirits, we also use the term to describe things of our past with which we haven’t made peace. When we say that someone is haunted, very rarely do we mean to imply that they are having ghostly visitations. Rather, we are haunted by our memories and the injuries of our past.

To extend this metaphor, I think many of us are constantly tricked by the ghosts of our past. We often pay homage to what has hurt us rather than doing the painful work of healing.

Consider the person who grew up in an abusive family but puts their abuser on a pedestal or the person who blames others for their problems rather than taking responsibility for their own healing. It is impossible to heal when we cannot see or know the truth about our past.

Even those of us lucky enough to have avoided terrible trauma still have hurtful memories that cause us to believe negative and untrue things about life and about ourselves.

As we honor our ancestors and enjoy spooky season this month, let’s do what we can to put our personal ghosts to rest. We do that by unpacking and reprocessing past events, being gentle with our younger selves, and realizing that some things that we were taught and told might not be the truth.

Ask Tarot for the Truth

Many tarot spreads have a position for the past or recent events. Yet, most tarot spreads do not offer positions to help us deeply unpack and reprocess the past, so we often have to ask the right questions and create our own spreads.

What are the best questions to ask the cards when we are trying to understand something from the past? We want to discover the truth rather than the mythology that has sprung up about the past. That means we are asking the cards to show us what is true about something or someone. For example, we can ask questions such as the following.

What was this person’s intention when they did this?

What were the factors present at the time that caused me to make this choice?

How did those long-ago events affect my life?

What is true about this situation?

What can I know about this?

Daily Tarot Girl Kate has a tarot spread to help you stop holding on to the past and move forward.

Psychology Today offers these tips to help heal childhood trauma.

Closeup of tarot reading and study.

Making Magic

Can magic help us release the ghosts of our past? Yes, but we need to be careful to avoid spiritual bypassing and what therapists call “magical thinking.”

In psychology, magical thinking is the belief that our thoughts and actions directly influence external events.

But, wait a minute, isn’t that what we magical people know to be true?

This is where critical thinking is paramount.

We know that magic works and can make a difference. Yet, we also know that the magical and the mundane must work together. If we are doing magic to heal, we must also do the daily tasks that promote our healing and avoid the things that hurt us.

I believe that tarot is a fabulous magical tool for helping us understand and release our personal hauntings. Yet, we must show up for the deeply emotional work that goes along with understanding tarot and ourselves. The efficacy of our magic will be directly affected by the depth of our emotional presence.

Count Your Fears

Since some fears are real and helpful, and others are false and hurtful, how can we manage our anxieties so that we can be protected but not limited?

A child afraid of the dark.

A child afraid of the dark.

I have always loved the expression, ‘count your blessings.” I use this as a spiritual directive to enumerate the things in life for which I am grateful. I think the exercise of making lists can be magical and healing as well as practical.

Gratitude is such an important practice. Yet, we must also acknowledge all our feelings, including fear.

In the spiritual community, fear is often met with shame. Someone once told me that fear is “False Evidence Appearing Real.” Certainly, we do sometimes have anxieties about things that don’t exist. Yet, fear is a survival mechanism that keeps us safe. It is important that we avoid real things that can hurt us, and fear helps us do that. We do not need to feel ashamed of our fears.

On the other hand, some people use their fears as a shield to protect them from the rigors of personal growth. I think it is these behaviors that cause well-intentioned spiritual people to suggest that fear is never real or appropriate.

Since some fears are real and helpful, and others are false and hurtful, how can we manage our anxieties so that we can be protected but not limited?

I think the solution is to count your fears. Make a list of all the things that you worry about. Then, go through the list, making decisions about each fear one by one. Is this fear real? What can I do about it?
Scratch off the fears that aren’t about anything real. Then, you are left with actual concerns. Make a plan for how you will deal with each one. If there is no practical solution, prayer and acceptance are reasonable options.
It is impossible and unsafe to live a life that is truly fearless. Yet, if we take the time and energy to understand and manage our fears, we can live life fearlessly and joyfully.

Fear and Tarot

Tarot generates a lot of needless fear and some legitimate fears.

Some people fear tarot because they believe that tarot is inherently evil. Obviously, nothing could be further from the truth.

Some people fear getting a tarot reading because they don’t want to be scammed. Sadly, that is a legitimate fear because a lot of scam artists use tarot to rip people off. Nicely, it is easy to find and work with tarot readers who have legitimate reputations and community support.

Some people, even tarot readers, fear certain cards in the deck. It is important to know that every card in the deck gives important messages.

Some tarot students fear reading for others because they don’t trust their skills yet. The way around this is to be clear that you are still a student.

Some people fear getting a tarot reading because they think they will hear bad news about their future. Typically, a good tarot reading will be helpful and will offer suggestions to make your future what you want it to be. Yet, it is also true that we will sometimes hear things we don’t want to hear. Healing comes when we are able to discern unpleasant truths, face them, and find solutions.

Making Magic

Making lists and crossing items off them can be a magical act.

When we write something on paper, we make it real. When we write a solution to a problem, we have taken a magical step as well as a practical one.

This is why many magical rituals involve writing things and burning the paper as a way of releasing what we don’t need or attracting what we do.

Listing your fears won’t make them worse. However, making an effort to solve and release them can be a magical exercise with helpful results.
