Not Like the Other Kids

Feeling like we don't fit in is familiar and unpleasant. What does it mean, and what can we do? That's what we are talking about this week.

There are many seedlings, but only one is blooming.

On most Saturdays, I do a free readings live stream on my YouTube channel, “The Saturday Psychic Sampler.” I invite subscribers and members to ask specific questions so I can read for them.

It often happens that people in the chat discover a common thread. It can feel like we are all going through similar things simultaneously.

This past Saturday, the theme was the feeling of not fitting in.

This is probably a core trauma for many of us because the first time we experienced the feeling of being an outsider was in elementary school.

Sometimes, we are outsiders because we are obviously different from the people around us. Sometimes, we are outsiders even if we look like those around us because we think and act differently.

Sometimes, we feel ill at ease even when people welcome us kindly.

Usually, actively trying to fit into a group will fail miserably. If we need to hide parts of ourselves to fit in, we must evaluate how much we are willing to sacrifice to be part of that particular group.

I am very used to feeling like the strangest person in the room. You might think that comes from being a full-time tarot professional. The truth is, being a well-known tarot reader is what has allowed me to find my place in every group.

I was always a weird kid and not entirely like the other children. A lot of people can relate to this feeling. Do you remember wanting to fit in, be invisible, or stand out? I think I wanted a bit of all three, which made me even more awkward.

It was not until I, as an adult, let myself be fully myself that I found true community and that most communities would welcome me for who I am.

For me, the easiest way to fit in was not to try to fit in.

When I think of my young self, I feel a sense of pride in my individuality—something I never felt back then.

It feels good to be part of a group. Yet, if the group asks us to conform too much, we will lose ourselves in the process.

It’s okay to be different from the other kids. Maybe it’s even a good thing. And when we embrace our differences, very often, others will, too.

Tarot Spread for Fitting into a Group

Whether you make friends easily or are more often on your own, there will always be times when you need to integrate into a group where you feel you don’t fit in.

Here is a tarot spread to help you assess the situation, understand what is true, and show up in the best possible way for yourself and others.

The top three cards are what you need to know about the people, community or group with whom you are interacting.

The second row of three cards are things you are thinking and feeling about being part of this community.

The final row of four cards is as follows:

Card 7 is something true about you integrating into this community.

Card 8 is something you fear but is not true about this situation.

Card 9 is how you can show up best for this group of which you are a part.

Card 10 is how you can show up best for yourself when interacting with this group.

Doing the Magic

Are there ways to use energy to attract like-minded people and find community? Of course, there are!

Tarot magic is quick and easy.  My favorite cards for friends and community are the Three of Cups and the Four of Wands. If you are looking for friends with whom to do specific activities, you can find cards that relate to those interests. For example, a travel group or a card club would be the Chariot. You might use the Knight of Swords to find a writer’s group. Justice might help you find those you can unite to work for social change.

Place the cards overnight in a special place in your home, along with some flowers or sweet-smelling incense to attract sweet friends.

Finding the Flow

How does the Law of Attraction work?

Fantasy illustration of a woman searching a forest and finding something special.

Over the past few years, we’ve heard a lot about manifestation and the Law of Attraction. Some of us know that the Law of Attraction is a repackaging of a philosophy that has also been taught in the past fifty years as “The Secret” and “Creative Visualization.”

The origins of this concept date back at least as early as 200 AD.

The concept is that we can use our will, our desires, and our ability to visualize the future we want, and that will allow us to create that future. Many magical communities teach something similar, where visualization might be accompanied by rituals that incorporate crystals, candles, and incense.

Whether we see this concept as magical, spiritual, or psychological, there is some truth to the idea that visualizing the outcome of our desire will help our desire become reality.

However, a problem occurs when people believe this in a fundamentalist way. Many people believe that each of us has the ability to manifest whatever we might want, and if we have not achieved what we want, we simply are not manifesting it correctly. This belief has a transverse aspect that is equally harmful. Some people believe that if we suffer misfortune, it is because we attracted that energy.

Further, this kind of thinking can cause people to believe that a deity or the universe itself is actively involved in each occurrence of our lives. Everything that happens has a lesson, a reward, or a punishment.

This sort of thinking can relieve us of the responsibility of compassion and can cause us to blame ourselves when things don’t go well.

I find no evidence that the universe really works this way. I know that magic will always work in some way, but not always the way we hope. I know that our belief in ourselves and our goals, and our ability to visualize our positive outcome can make a huge positive difference. Yet, we must understand that there are other factors involved. No matter how much we meditate, no matter how many crystals we have, or what spells we perform, life can throw us curveballs. A true spiritual path teaches us how to use our energy and mindset to recover and move forward rather than blaming us for what happened.

While I know the universe will not bend to our every desire, I also know there is a universal flow we can attune to that makes everything easier. When we are in that state of flow, the difficulties are buffered, our minds are focused, and our goals seem within reach.

What is that flow, and how do we find it?

Some say the flow is an expression of a higher power. Some say it is life force energy. Whatever it is, the energy is palpable when we feel it and obviously absent when we lose it.

There is nothing that makes us lose it faster than self-doubt.

Magical energy, however we see or understand it, is all around us. Magic is in the air we breathe and in the food we eat. When we pay attention to the energy around us, we find the flow that makes life easier.

Tarot Divination to Find Your Flow

What questions can you ask the cards when you feel disconnected from the energetic flow and want to reconnect?

Here are some questions to consider.

What am I doing that creates disconnection?

How can I support myself in staying more connected?

What can I keep in my mind to support staying in the flow?

How can I process this difficulty while still staying connected?

What can I do to become connected?

Did you know that Johnny Depp is a tarot artist?

I thought this was really cute. It’s The Best Tarot Decks to Buy According to Your Zodiac Sign.

Here is a tutorial to help you use tarot in your manifestation work.

The Star and Temperance from Weiser Tarot.

Making Magic

There are two specific tarot cards I like to work with to help me stay attuned to the flow of universal energy. Both of these Major Arcana cards depict water that is not water.

In Major Arcana 14, Temperance, the angel pours water from cup to cup. Yet, traditionally, we know that something greater is happening. What is being mixed in those cups is something magical and alchemical. What is being created is a solution in both meanings of the word.

In Major Arcana 17, the Star, we see a woman pouring water onto water and land. We know this character as the Aquarian Water-Bearer. We also know that Aquarius is an Air sign. The Water-Bearer is not pouring water at all. The character in Major Arcana 17 is a star herself, pouring starlight from her jug. She is pouring healing light onto water and land.

When I need to catch the flow, I look at both these cards and think about the energy that is represented as water but is not. I breathe deeply and imagine breathing this energy directly into myself. Very quickly, I can feel the energetic alignment.

Try this the next time you need to find the flow.

Invoking Inspiration

How can you find your energy and your motivation easily? Invoke it!

Graphic of a person sitting on books looking at the moon.

What does it mean to feel uninspired? We all grapple with times when inspiration is in short supply. This can mean that we don’t feel connected to spirit, aren’t motivated to do our usual activities, or aren’t being productive creatively.

So many things can zap our inspiration. It doesn’t usually make sense to try to determine what is causing the energy drain or blockage. When we find ourselves uninspired, the easiest thing to do is to call inspiration to ourselves directly.

Ancient storytellers would begin their story by asking the gods for inspiration. We can perform a modern-day version of this whenever we need energy or motivation.

Rather than sitting in frustration or blaming ourselves for our lack of productivity, we can ask the energy of inspiration to come to us.

We can take a deep breath to bring inspiration into us, do a physical activity like yoga to raise our energy, and let our intention be to welcome inspiration.

When we lack inspiration, we need not panic or feel bad about ourselves. All we must do is invoke inspiration and let it flow.

Inspiration in Tarot

Which tarot cards speak of inspiration? My favorite is the Ace of Wands. We can find an interesting lesson in the connection between the elements of Fire and Air by considering that the Ace of Swords can also represent a certain type of inspiration.

The Ace of Wands represents creative inspiration, vitality, and motivation. The Ace of Swords can speak of a wonderful new idea or a new strategy to solve a problem.

When we see these cards poorly aspected, we know that some inspiration is needed. When we see these cards in favorable positions, we can assume that we will have the inspiration we need.

What differences do you see between the Ace of Wands and the Ace of Swords?

From Around the Web

One way to find inspiration in your tarot journey is to procure a new deck. Sadly, many online outlets are selling counterfeit decks. It is always best to buy directly from the publisher or creator.

La Panthère Studio sells some wonderful decks, including the new Rhythm and Soul Tarot where many of your favorite tarot friends, including me, posed for the card images!

US Games Systems, Inc. is the oldest American tarot publisher, located in Stamford, Connecticut.

Red Wheel/Weiser is the publisher of many great tarot decks and books.

Llewellyn Worldwide has a wonderful catalog of great decks and books.

A woman finding power at the water's edge.

Making Magic

One of my favorite quick magical spells for inspiration comes from a Grateful Dead song. The first words of Terrapin Station are “Inspiration, move me brightly.” This is the storyteller asking for inspiration to tell the story and is a simple magical invocation.

To invoke is to call a spirit to you. Church services begin with a prayer called the invocation.

When we ask for inspiration, we are invoking that energy.

As with all magic, we can use elaborate rituals or simple magic. If we are feeling uninspired, we probably don’t want to perform something complex.

The next time you feel uninspired, take a breath, ask inspiration to move you, and see how quickly you find your energy.

Feeling It

It seems we are all dealing with a lot of feelings right now. But how do we manage our emotions and tune in to intuition? That is what we are exploring this week.

Graphic of a seeing heart.

Are you feeling squishy after Friday’s new moon in Cancer? I think a lot of us are in our feelings right now.

We often use the term ‘feeling’ to describe both our emotions and our intuition. Understanding our feelings can be tricky, especially when we're also trying to decipher our intuitive hits. The fact that we've all been conditioned to suppress our emotions and feel shame about our emotional reactions only adds to the complexity. Some of us were also trained to override intuition.

When I was young, we did not commonly use terms like ‘emotional maturity’ and ‘emotional regulation.’ I feel that most adults are on a crash course to learn to handle and express their feelings. Some do this better than others.

I am fascinated by the way the rise in popularity of tarot and divination has helped some people find emotional maturity and hurt others. Those who have studied tarot and learned the lessons within the cards have begun using tarot to help find some balance. Others have twisted the messages of the cards to justify unhealthy behaviors or have mistaken viral collective predictions on social media for actual divinatory guidance. Given that there is already much confusion between emotional feelings and intuitive ones, the addition of poor divination practices can do much harm. Grounding our spiritual practices in logic and well-being is important. We must do this instead of using those practices to affirm hurtful things.

Another confusion is how often we are advised to ‘trust our intuition’ or ‘trust our gut’ without instruction on differentiating intuition from emotional fears and desires.

The first step toward untangling these confusions is recognizing that our emotions are normal and should never be a source of shame. From there, we can find the power inherent in our emotions. Emotions fuel motivation and magic.

The second step is to embrace this wisdom. Until we understand and regulate our emotions, we cannot reliably tune into our intuition for ourselves. We may be able to give great intuitive information and advice to others, but not to ourselves.

Third, we can only tune into our own intuitive information when we are fully detached from our desires and fears. This takes us back to the importance of our emotional regulation.

In divination, we must be willing to study and stay in a mindset that fosters growth and healing rather than only quick comfort.

Finally, as we learn to experience and work with the full weight of our emotions and intuition, we must also have confidence in our ongoing our capacity to feel, act, heal, and grow.

Emotions in Tarot

Which tarot cards speak of and convey emotions? I would argue that they all do. A great tarot study exercise is to look through the deck and assign at least one emotion to each card. While not every reading will focus on emotions, each card carries a particular emotional energy.

This can be very helpful when we are working to acknowledge and understand what we are feeling. Divination with tarot can help us sort out our emotions.

Divination also helps us to feel seen. Whether reading for ourselves or having a session with a trusted friend or professional, it is healing to know that someone else, be it a person with a deck of cards or the universe itself, understands how we feel, even if we do not.

Ultimately, the cards help us feel seen and then help us see what is going on inside.

From Around the Web

Benebell Wen has reviewed the Inner Light Tarot, and it looks fabulous!

Here are Six Key Skills for Emotional Regulation.

I stumbled on this older article from Avery Hart, How to Connect to Your Intuition with Tarot.

Meditating with an amethyst cluster.

Making Magic

We can use magic to increase our sense of emotional balance. We might use certain gemstones, candles, and oils to support that goal.

While emotional balance is necessary in life, it is important to note that emotion is the most important ingredient in any magical work. We must be able to feel and see our goal in order to make it reality. We must feel our success before we have it. We must see our results before they arrive. Yet, we cannot be delusional about our expectations and must do the mundane work to support our goals.

This is another reason emotional balance is so important. We must be nuanced enough to know what is possible without being either pessimistic or grandiose.

When we can visualize a clear goal and feel it in the depths of our emotions, we are more likely to succeed in attracting our desires and achieving our goals.
