Feeling It

It seems we are all dealing with a lot of feelings right now. But how do we manage our emotions and tune in to intuition? That is what we are exploring this week.

Graphic of a seeing heart.

Are you feeling squishy after Friday’s new moon in Cancer? I think a lot of us are in our feelings right now.

We often use the term ‘feeling’ to describe both our emotions and our intuition. Understanding our feelings can be tricky, especially when we're also trying to decipher our intuitive hits. The fact that we've all been conditioned to suppress our emotions and feel shame about our emotional reactions only adds to the complexity. Some of us were also trained to override intuition.

When I was young, we did not commonly use terms like ‘emotional maturity’ and ‘emotional regulation.’ I feel that most adults are on a crash course to learn to handle and express their feelings. Some do this better than others.

I am fascinated by the way the rise in popularity of tarot and divination has helped some people find emotional maturity and hurt others. Those who have studied tarot and learned the lessons within the cards have begun using tarot to help find some balance. Others have twisted the messages of the cards to justify unhealthy behaviors or have mistaken viral collective predictions on social media for actual divinatory guidance. Given that there is already much confusion between emotional feelings and intuitive ones, the addition of poor divination practices can do much harm. Grounding our spiritual practices in logic and well-being is important. We must do this instead of using those practices to affirm hurtful things.

Another confusion is how often we are advised to ‘trust our intuition’ or ‘trust our gut’ without instruction on differentiating intuition from emotional fears and desires.

The first step toward untangling these confusions is recognizing that our emotions are normal and should never be a source of shame. From there, we can find the power inherent in our emotions. Emotions fuel motivation and magic.

The second step is to embrace this wisdom. Until we understand and regulate our emotions, we cannot reliably tune into our intuition for ourselves. We may be able to give great intuitive information and advice to others, but not to ourselves.

Third, we can only tune into our own intuitive information when we are fully detached from our desires and fears. This takes us back to the importance of our emotional regulation.

In divination, we must be willing to study and stay in a mindset that fosters growth and healing rather than only quick comfort.

Finally, as we learn to experience and work with the full weight of our emotions and intuition, we must also have confidence in our ongoing our capacity to feel, act, heal, and grow.

Emotions in Tarot

Which tarot cards speak of and convey emotions? I would argue that they all do. A great tarot study exercise is to look through the deck and assign at least one emotion to each card. While not every reading will focus on emotions, each card carries a particular emotional energy.

This can be very helpful when we are working to acknowledge and understand what we are feeling. Divination with tarot can help us sort out our emotions.

Divination also helps us to feel seen. Whether reading for ourselves or having a session with a trusted friend or professional, it is healing to know that someone else, be it a person with a deck of cards or the universe itself, understands how we feel, even if we do not.

Ultimately, the cards help us feel seen and then help us see what is going on inside.

Making Magic

We can use magic to increase our sense of emotional balance. We might use certain gemstones, candles, and oils to support that goal.

While emotional balance is necessary in life, it is important to note that emotion is the most important ingredient in any magical work. We must be able to feel and see our goal in order to make it reality. We must feel our success before we have it. We must see our results before they arrive. Yet, we cannot be delusional about our expectations and must do the mundane work to support our goals.

This is another reason emotional balance is so important. We must be nuanced enough to know what is possible without being either pessimistic or grandiose.

When we can visualize a clear goal and feel it in the depths of our emotions, we are more likely to succeed in attracting our desires and achieving our goals.

Finding the Way Forward

Sometimes, the way forward isn't clear, and that feels scary. Yet, the unknown holds amazing opportunity and promise.

A woman reads a map to find her way.

Sometimes, the universe gives us breadcrumbs to help us find our way forward. We hate it when people breadcrumb us, but the universe likes to provide us with clues rather than a complete picture of the road ahead.

We often look for guidance while still determining our path and our decisions. That guidance could come from a trusted friend or family member, a paid counselor or coach, or our reflection. Divination can give us a focus, inspiration, or even a glimpse of what might come next. Sometimes, that guidance feels clearer than others.

When we feel uncertain about what to do or what might happen next, we often forget the power of uncertainty.

When there is no clear direction and no obvious answer, the way forward is filled with limitless possibilities. Some of those possibilities are things we fear, so we worry about what might happen. But some of those possibilities include wonderful opportunities for us.

The power of uncertainty is this. The less we have locked in for the future, the more freedom we have to create, find, and participate in amazing things we might not have anticipated.

When we cast our nets wide and expect great opportunities, we will usually find them.

The trick is to be patient, to find the breadcrumbs that give us clues, to stay optimistic, and to anticipate that positive things will happen. Most importantly, we need to have faith in our ability to make decisions, handle difficulties, and land in a good place.

Finding the Way Forward with Divination

Whether we read for ourselves or ask a friend or professional to read for us, divination is often a way to quell our fears about the future and find solutions, ideas, and inspiration for the way forward.

Sometimes, we receive clear predictions that help us. Most of the time, we find only a few clues and some advice. If we go into the process knowing the value of those clues, we can often get helpful information. If we are focused only on receiving a prediction, we may not ask the questions that give the most enlightening readings.

Here are some questions to ask in divination when you wonder about the way forward.

What is the best thing for me to do right now?

What do I need to know right now?

What should I pursue?

What can I know about the way forward?

I remember when Mary K. Greer compiled the information for this 2011 blog post, and I am one of the many voices compiled here. I had forgotten about it until it randomly showed up in my feed. It was interesting to reread it and realize how little consensus there is amongst tarot readers about how tarot reading should be learned.

Creating a vision board.

Making Magic

One sort of magic we are all familiar with is the vision board. A vision board is a digital or analog collage that reflects your hopes, desires, and vision for the future. If you know exactly what you want, it is easy to find images and words to place on your vision board.

But what if you are not sure what you want for your future?

We are often told to be as specific as possible when doing magic to manifest things for the future. Yet, it is hard to be specific when we don’t know what we want.

I think there is a type of vision board we can create when we are unsure about the future but still want to put energy into making it great.

Find pictures and words that excite and inspire you, and work with those. Once your vision board is complete, you may learn something about your desires as you contemplate what you have created.

Hopes and Fears

This week, we will examine our hopes and fears. Although their energies are essentially the same, they differ substantially.

A young woman reaches for the sky.

Many traditional tarot spreads have a position called “Hopes and Fears.” The card that falls into that position is meant to inform us about our hopes and fears.

I am embarrassed to admit that it was only recently that I fully understood that hopes and fears are the same thing.

I had often wondered why it would not be better to have a position for hopes and another for fears. Finally, it occurred to me that we hope for some things to happen and hope that other things won’t happen. We fear that some things will happen and others won’t.

Yet, hope and fear don’t carry the same energy. It is more pleasant to feel hope than fear. A tarot spread position called “Hopes” would be able to convey the same information as the traditional “Hopes and Fears” position. Yet, I think the tarotists of yesteryear were smart to give us the tradition of divining for hopes and fears.

People are often praised for being hopeful and shamed for being fearful. Yet fear is a necessary response that keeps us from taking unnecessary risks. When we engage in any sort of introspective practice, we need to be able to examine our fears without guilt or shame.

Once we understand our fears, we can often shift our energy from anxiety to optimism by expressing our fears in the language of hope.
“I hope I get the job!” differs from “I am afraid I won’t get the job!” even though they express the same thing.

When we can use hopeful language rather than fearful language, we engage the universe in the energy of making things happen rather than the energy of avoidance. This may help us create the things we hope for and avoid what we fear.

Our Hopes and Fears in Divination

When we seek answers in the practice of divination, we bring our hopes and fears to the table, including our hopes and fears about divination itself.

Many people lose hope when a reading does not give them the answer they want, rather than using the reading to find a better direction. Many people believe in misinformation, which causes them to fear that divination is somehow harmful.

When we read for others we always hope for a great connection. We are also understandably concerned that we do not give bad information or cause harm. Fear can be a guardrail that helps us attend to our duty of care for those we read. At the same time, anxiety at the tarot table can often shut down intuition.

It is also true that if we interpret the cards based on our hopes and fears or the hopes and fears of others, the reading will not be good.

I believe that in divination, we need to bring in a third energy to balance the hopes and fears. The energy we need is trust. We need to trust our skills, the cards, and the universe. If we cannot be in that place of trust, we are best to decline the reading.

Here’s a recent article from Water Moon Shop about fake decks, how to spot them, and why they are such a problem.

Bustle.com has your July Horoscopes.

A woman sits with candles and crystals to adjust her energy.

Making Magic

I believe that divination is a form of magic, and that magic enhances divination. When we begin a reading by clearing our energy, grounding, and centering, we come to the table ready to channel wisdom. When we set our intention and create sacred space, we invite helpful energies to attend, protect, and empower the divination.

One important energetic exercise to help us prepare for a reading is to release our hopes and fears. We need to come to the divination with no attachments to outcome. That is the only way we can assure the divination will be good.

The term I use for the state of being that is best for divination is ‘compassionate detachment.’ We are emotionally detached to be fully objective, but our detached state is not a result of not caring.

We will do the best divination in the mental, emotional, and spiritual state of compassionate detachment.

One way to achieve this state is to visualize a small box and all your hopes and fears flowing into it. This simple self-guided meditation prior to divination is often enough to allow your intuitive brilliance to shine through.

Balance is a Verb

This week, we are focused on the importance of balance in our personal and professional lives. Balance is an important spiritual concept that only works when we actively practice it.

A young woman in a balanced yoga pose outdoors.

This Thursday is the summer solstice, the longest day of the year and the shortest night in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, Thursday is the winter solstice, the longest night and the shortest day.

Each year, we observe two equinoxes and two solstices. These days mark the beginning of a new season.

I have always found it ironic that the last day of increasing daylight marks the first day of summer, and the last day of increasing nighttime marks the first day of winter. Throughout the year, the sun, moon, and seasons engage in a constant dance that expresses the balance inherent in nature. Our observation of the changing seasons reminds us of the importance of balance in our daily lives.

We hear a lot about the importance of balance. We need internal balance to maintain our mental health and a balanced diet to maintain our overall wellness.

We must maintain a balance between our professional and personal lives. We must find the balance between what we want and what is possible.

Balance is also a spiritual concept. Many ancient spiritual symbols have balance as their core meaning. But what does balance mean from a spiritual perspective?

When we consider our happiness, integrity, ability to achieve our goals, and ability to maintain our well-being, balance will somehow appear as the key.

We cultivate our internal balance when we take the time to consider another perspective to something unpleasant or even to a deeply held belief.

We practice balance when we allow ourselves the grace of rest, even when we have important deadlines to meet.

The expression “As above, so below” teaches us something about balance. This important spiritual concept appears in pre-Christian texts and the Bible. There are many ways to interpret this phrase, and each offers insight into the constant balancing act that all life is. For example, this phrase helps us explore the balance between the mundane and the magical. We may pray or set intentions for something we want, but our results will not be good if we don’t do the mundane work as well.

Practicing balance leads us to compassion but also keeps us from losing ourselves in the despair of those around us.

My favorite yoga postures teach balance. For example, when holding postures like standing bow pulling or standing head to knee, every part of the body is engaged and active, yet we appear motionless. From practicing these postures, I have gained an understanding of the spiritual nature of balance.

When striving for balance, we are engaged in the practice of balance. The moment we believe we have achieved balance, we are in danger of losing it. That’s why I say that balance is a verb. We can never expect to fully balance our lives perfectly. But if we are working toward that balance, we are doing what we need to do.

Finding Balance in Tarot

We learn that balance is important in spirituality and mundane life because so many tarot cards have balance as a core concept.

Of course, all of the Twos can speak of balance. In the Waite Smith deck, the pillars in the High Priestess, Card Two of the Major Arcana, are referenced in many Major Arcana cards, carrying that concept of balance throughout the Major Arcana. Justice, Major Arcana 11, speaks of balance, as does Strength, Card Eight.

Here is an interesting exercise to help you learn what tarot teaches us about balance and learn more about the cards that reference balance in tarot.

Go through your deck, card by card. Find all the cards that you feel speak about balance. Now, go through those cards and decide what sort of balance is portrayed in each card and what you can learn from each card about practicing balance in your life.

From AP news, good news out of Virginia. It’s about time that archaic laws against divination be repealed!

A wreath in the water to celebrate the summer solstice.

Making Magic

The solstice offers an opportunity for us to do some seasonal magic.

The concept of seasonal magic is simple. Whatever the earth is doing, we want to do as well.

On the longest day of the year, we might do magic to shine a light on something. That could mean beginning an advertising campaign to grow your business. It might mean setting an intention that the truth will be made apparent. It might mean a special divination session to discover important information.

On the other hand, we might lean into the energy of the summer solstice by saying goodbye to the sun and focusing on the impending darkness. We would use this energy if there were something in our lives that we wanted to diminish or hide from public view.

The changing seasons always offer us energy that we can use to make changes in our lives.
