Because We Have Gathered

Some thoughts and pictures from StaarCon 2023.

T. Susan Chang speaks at StaarCon 2023.

Because We Have Gathered

Next week the Tarot Topics Weekly Newsletter will be back to normal, with the regular features you enjoy, and a new feature for 2023.

This newsletter is all about StaarCon 2023, because StaarCon 2023 is what I have been all about this week.

So many wonderful things happened that it would take a book to give you all the details, and that would only be my story. Each attendee has their own story, their own set of experiences, and their own take-aways.

I can tell you this for sure, though. We all made new friends. We all deepened connections with existing friends. We all spent time with people we deeply admire. We all learned new things about tarot, divination, and ourselves.

Although we are already deep into planning StaarCon 2024, leaving StaarCon was sad for me. It reminded me of what it felt like to leave summer camp when I was a child. Yes, it is nice to return to the comforts of home. The knowledge and friendships we bring with us enhance our lives as we go forward. Yet it is also sad to say goodbye to our friends, and to the fun time that could never last long enough.

In my welcome letter in the StaarCon 2023 program I shared some thoughts about why it is important that we gather, and why our gatherings matter. I will share part of it here, with you.

We gather. Whether in person or cyberspace, we gather to learn, to share, to laugh, and to create.

We come from all over the world. We use a variety of tools, and practice in unique ways, each for our own reasons. We are of all ages, cultures, races, and genders. Yet we have one mighty and profound thing in common.

We all commune with the divine. We all seek answers from the universe. We all pursue truth, knowledge, and insight.

We come to StaarCon to gather in this shared, collective energy. When we return, each to our own space, we are better because we have gathered.

Our Community Inspirations

There are so many inspiring people within the world of divination. We were lucky to have quite a few authors, artists, and influencers at StaarCon 2023.

With more than a million followers on TikTok, tarot reader Madam Adam is a force of nature.
Tarot Artist Dame Darcy weaves fantasy and beauty into everything she touches, including tarot.

Ciro Marchetti has created tarot decks that have redefined how we see tarot art.

My very first tarot inspiration, back in the 1980s when I bought my first tarot deck, was Mary K. Greer. I remember looking through the small section of tarot books in a local store and finding a book by Mary K. Greer. On the back of the book was Mary’s headshot, and a short bio. I did not buy the book that day, but I spent some time looking at Mary’s picture. As I did, I thought, well, if this nice, normal-looking person could find wisdom from the cards and share that wisdom, maybe I could as well.

Having Mary K. Greer as a headlining presenter at StaarCon 2023 was a dream come true for many, especially me.

Throughout our work with tarot, we will have many who inspire us through their art, through their words, and through their wisdom.

Who are your inspirations in your tarot journey? How will you work to inspire others on their journey?

Humility Enhances Intuition

When we work with divine energy it is important to stay grounded!

A woman hugging a heart.

In a conversation recently a friend uttered this phrase, and it stuck with me.

“Humility enhances intuition.”

I sometimes notice would-be divination practitioners touting their clairvoyance or empathic nature and regaling fellow students with amazing stories of their intuitive prowess. It is usually these same prospective readers who, when pressed, come up short on real divination skills. Meanwhile, the person in the class who listens, rarely talks about themself, and asks thoughtful questions, is usually the one who gives a jaw-dropping reading.

The truth is this. The more we think about ourselves, our gifts, and our skills, the less we are open to our intuition.

This does not mean that we should not feel empowered and confident. It does mean that if we are indeed confident, we are able to listen to others, and listen to sprit.

Our ability to gather information from otherworldly sources should never be our focus. The information we gather, and the people we gather it for, should always be the center of our attention.

This is StaarCon week. This weekend, sages, seers, and students will gather in person and online to teach, study, learn, and laugh together.

Something that should not be surprising about the well-known and well-revered teachers of our divination community is this. Our most esteemed leaders are grounded, open-minded, and humble. They are as excited to teach us as we are to learn from them. They write the books and design the tools that allow us to be who we are and do what we do, yet, they treat us as equals.

As we learn their techniques, we can also learn from their demeanor. The more that we are grounded in concepts of service and study, the more intuitive we will be.

Staying Grounded with Tarot

“We all put our pants on one leg at a time”. This expression reminds us that, no matter how important or talented someone is, we are essentially the same.

When we find truth in divination, we are often in awe of the experience. That may mean we think our reader is divine, or that we ourselves are extra special. In many ways we are all divine, and all special, but none more than another.

Yet, we must also each know our value, our strength, and our worth. How can we stay humble and grounded, but also confident in our skills and our inherent worth?

Try a two-card tarot spread!

Let the first card give insight and advice on how to stay grounded and humble.

Let the second card help you find your confidence and sense of self-worth.

What You Don't Know

It is always better to know the truth, even when we don't like what we see. The trick is in knowing what questions to ask, and where to find the truth we seek.

Surprised OMG shocked woman.

One of my favorite expressions is “You don’t know what you don’t know”. This sounds obvious but it presents quite a conundrum. If you are learning something, how can you know what is important to remember, and what isn’t? If you are doing something you have never done before, how do you know what questions to ask to adequately prepare?

There are many levels of knowing and not knowing. There is what we consciously know, what we admit to knowing, what we know subconsciously, what we know intuitively without evidence or confirmation, and what we think we know, but are mistaken.

We sometimes conflate belief with knowledge, often to our detriment.

Divination is the practice of making the unknown known, and of gathering information that may not be discoverable by ordinary means. Yet even we in the divination community disagree about how much we can learn in divination that we do not already on some level know.

One thing we diviners agree upon is this. Divination can bring what is in the subconscious into our consciousness. This process can prepare us, protect us, and heal us.

Another common expression is “What you don’t know can hurt you”. In all aspects of life, we need to be ready to learn and unlearn, ready to ask questions, and ready to find the right teachers.

Sometimes the value of divination is in learning what questions to ask, and what teachers to trust.

There is never a time when we should stop learning or stop asking questions. Another popular expression is “Knowledge is power”. This is true on so many levels. It’s easy to say that we would rather not know something. It’s easy to hide from the truth. Yet, the damage that comes from not knowing is usually much greater than the damage that comes from the truth.

There is still time to make your plan to join us at StaarCon 2023, either in person or online. To learn more about StaarCon, check out the latest episode of the StaarCon Variety Show. Frank and I discuss some of our StaarCon plans, and I interview StaarCon presenter Jen Sankey. This is a magical and informative episode. You can listen wherever you get your podcasts, or catch it on YouTube.

Finding the Unknown in Tarot

Is there an answer to every question? I don’t think so. Some tarot decks include an “Unknown Card” which, when it appears, suggests that the answer to the question is unknowable at this time. There are other cards in the deck that can speak to what is unknowable. The Wheel of Fortune can say that anything can happen. The Moon can warn us that there are unknown forces at work. The High Priestess is the keeper of secrets.

Knowing that there is not a reliable answer, or a specific solution, can be helpful. When we know there is not a singular path to follow, we have greater power to influence a situation to our own advantage.

It can be very helpful to directly ask the cards questions like, “What do I need to know?” or “What am I not seeing?”

We can also state our current understanding about something and simply ask the cards, “Is this true?”

We might want to ask the cards to show us a truth that we are avoiding, or a belief we need to question.

When we delve into the cards in this way, we often begin a deeper process of introspection and self-awareness.

Looking Back and Moving Forward

This is a sacred time, when we remember the past and look to the future.

Happy senior woman looking though a photo album.

It is the first week of a brand-new year!

January is a special month for me because of StaarCon, now just a few weeks away. As we focus on producing StaarCon, this newsletter will be slightly abbreviated. Look for new features in February!

At this time of year, we often spend time looking at the past, whether with nostalgia, fondness, regret, or grief. At the very same time, we are looking forward, making plans, resolutions, and intentions.

To stand in a specific point of time and look both backward and forward can be a sacred thing. We can honor the past and learn from it. The past reminds us that the present moment is fleeting and precious. We can plan, hope, dream, and manifest for the future, all in this single sacred moment.

Our spiritual practices of mindfulness, meditation, yoga, and divination can help us as we learn from the past and create the future. In tarot, the Six of Cups often speaks of the past. The Two of Wands can speak of setting plans and goals. But which card helps us to remember the present moment? Perhaps all seventy-eight cards, the whole of tarot, can help us stay present and mindful, especially at this sacred time of looking back and forward .

The StaarCorner

Whether you join us in person or online, StaarCon 2023 has so much to offer. With over fifty presentations, great shopping opportunities, and great community, StaarCon 2023 can be a life-changing experience for you.

The presentations you attend live, whether in person or online, will be a wonderful opportunity to learn and interact with your community. The recordings of classes you missed that you view during the AfterGlow will allow you to learn at your own pace.

This fully hybrid conference really offers the best of both worlds.

You can join us for one, two, or all three days. The lounge events during the AfterGlow are open to all ticketholders!

Two Cards for the New Year

At this time of year, it is powerful to do both tarot divination and tarot manifestation. An easy way to think about the difference between these two techniques is this. When you divine with tarot, you pull cards face down, at random. When you manifest with tarot, you pull cards face up, consciously choosing the cards whose energy you want to manifest or remove.

The two cards for the new year are simple. The first card is what you want to leave behind in 2022. The second card is what you want to welcome in 2023.

If you do this as a divination by pulling the cards at random, you are letting the universe guide you and give you your focus. If you do this by choosing the cards face up, you are making a conscious decision, and using the energy of tarot to help you manifest your goals.

Try both these techniques this week. Use the full potential of tarot to give your year a great start!
