What Colors Create

Colors have the power to change moods, and to manifest desires. Colors can also be part of our intuitive lexicon, as we can interpret the colors we see in auras, and in the cards.

Coloring pictures with a marker

We live in a colorful world. Nature presents us with a bounty of hues. Food, flowers, trees, rocks, and animals can all be brightly colored.

The very first creative activity most children enjoy is coloring with crayons and markers. It is there, often for the first time, that we are confronted with choosing colors.

Life offers us many opportunities to choose colors. Clothing, cosmetics, and home décor are all color-based.

Studies show us that colors can influence moods and behaviors.

We also know that we can consciously choose colors to help us heal and manifest our intentions.

We can dress in colors that match our intentions. We can burn candles of specific colors, or work with colored crystals. We can use colored lights to help our mood and our intentions.

It is easy to incorporate the power of colors into your daily practices. The concept is that each color can attract and support certain things. There are three basic systems for color associations.

One system works with the chakras. Each of the seven major chakras has a color association. Starting with the root chakra at the base of the spine and ending with the crown chakra at the top of the head, the associated colors are the seven colors of the prism. Therefore, if you wanted to support your root chakra and improve your sense of grounding, you might wear red, or burn a red candle. If you wanted to support your throat chakra and your ability to speak clearly, you might wear blue or burn a blue candle.

Another color system works with the Four Elements, Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. You might use elemental colors to welcome a needed energy to your life.

The third system works with the associations that are common in our culture. Green brings money, for example, and red brings love.

When harnessing the power of colors, your intention is paramount. You can use the color that feels right for your purpose and have confidence that the color you have chosen will help you manifest your needs and wishes.

We often think of our own power to create something beautiful using colored paints or fabrics. Color also has the power to help us create something beautiful in our lives.

We so often choose colors when we shop, when we dress, and when we cook. When we choose colors consciously, we have another tool to help us create the life we want.

What do colors create? Colors create mood and magic!

Colorful tarot cards

Reading the Colors of Tarot

There are so many different tarot decks, and each one has its own color theme. Some decks are black and white, some have a muted tone, some have a predominant color.

If you have a larger tarot collection, it is a good exercise to try reading with differently colored decks and see if certain color themes stimulate your intuition.

Very often the decks we find most visually appealing are not the decks that will read best for us. If you can understand which color themes stimulate your intuition best, you can seek out decks that use those colors.

If you are working with a deck that employs a variety of colors, you can interpret the colors of the cards as part of your reading. Try this as an exercise.

Lay out a tarot spread. Before you interpret any of the cards, look at the colors that are present. Is a color that is dominant? Is there a color that draws your eyes? Are there a few cards of similar coloring?

What conclusions can you draw based solely on the colors you see in the cards? How does this inform your reading? Can the colors give you additional information, or help you see an overarching theme?

This week I shared a post on my personal blog, “How Tarot Teaches Us About Itself”. In this post I give a lot of information about how my understanding of individual cards, and groups of cards, grows over the years.

Yesterday was ‘Twosday’! In honor of this special date, we did a class on my YouTube channel about the Twos in tarot. You can watch the replay if you missed the class.

Guidance on the Journey

Some people can naturally and easily see the aura of light and color that surrounds and emanates from living beings. If you are not a person who naturally sees auras, there are exercises you can do to help develop this ability.

Start by learning to view things with a soft gaze. If you are not driving or trying to read it is a helpful practice to let your gaze float a bit. As you do this, your imagination will naturally float with you, and try to fill in the blanks that come with your unfocused vision.

Your eyesight, imagination, and psychic vision are all seated in the brow chakra, or the third eye. It can be helpful to anoint the third eye with oil or hold a crystal to it in advance of these exercises.

To practice aura viewing it is helpful to have a willing volunteer who will allow you to gaze at them. However, you can also visit a busy place like a shopping mall and simply sit and watch people from afar.

Focus on your conscious breath and your soft gaze. Over time you will begin to see the color and light around people. Eventually, you will be able to read the auras of people to help understand their wellbeing of body, mind, and spirit.

Digging Deeper

If we want truth and knowledge, we must take the time to look beneath the surface.

Graphic showing thoughts flowing from the brain

When we consider people, situations, and spiritual truths, one thing is usually true. The deeper you dig, the more you discover. Things on the surface are rarely the whole story.

This does not mean that what we present in short snippets is a lie. It means that the truth is always complex.

When we want to know someone, we need time to deepen our relationship with them, and our understanding of them.

When we want to develop a new skill, we need time and practice to strengthen a new muscle.

When we want to figure something out, we need to look beneath the surface to see all that is true.

In spiritual study especially, we need the time and patience to dig deeply into our practices. For example, it is easy to remember some rote keywords for tarot cards and recite those keywords when the cards appear in divination. But that is not the same as a true tarot reading that digs deeply into the cards and into the question to discover all the information.

In astrology, many people read their horoscope in the newspaper. But sun sign astrology is not the whole of astrology. Sun sign astrology was invented a century ago to sell newspapers. If you really want to know what information astrology has for you, you must dig a bit deeper and read a full chart.

It is easy to gloss over a subject and decide that you have all the information you need. Sometimes, that will indeed be good enough. But very often, to get the scope of what we need to know, we must take the time and energy to dig in and discover the truth.

Digging Deeper with Tarot

One of the things I say when I teach tarot is this. To give a better tarot reading, ask more questions and pull more cards.

It is easy to get a surface answer. Sometimes that is all that we need. Sometimes, one question should naturally lead to another.

It is simple to try this technique.

Ask a question and pull a few cards to get your answer. As you look at these cards, do you see another question? Is there something more you want to know? If so, ask that question and pull more cards. Keep doing this until you have a nuanced understanding of what is going on.

Each tarot card, and each group of cards, can give answers. Yet, each tarot card can also pose questions.

The question is the most important tool for digging deeply for information, in tarot and in life.

The World tarot card

Guidance on the Journey

It is important to dig into each tarot card. We need to do this not just once, but in an ongoing way. When we build our relationship with tarot, it is just like building a relationship with a person. We never expect to know everything, and we always expect to continue learning.

Major Arcana 21, The World, is a great example of a message about continued deepening, and a great to card to dig into.

A common keyword for The World is “attainment”. We often think of this simply as completion. Yet, if we see the World only as the completion of a journey, we miss the richness of this card.

The World can also be about seeing the bigger picture. The World can be about world travel and world view. The World can be about expansive opportunity. The World invites us to consider our place in the world. The World asks us about our experience of our environment. The World gives us agency to create the circumstances we want for our future.

The World is a card that teaches us to dig deeply. When we dig deeply into the World, we find new understanding of a profound card.

The Root and the Crown

We can connect with heaven and earth to channel power and wisdom that will ground us and inform us.

Meditating silhouette depicting chakras

The Root and the Crown

The seven major chakras are aligned along the spine, from bottom to top. We see these areas as the energy centers of our body. At the base of the spine is the first chakra, also called the base chakra and the root chakra. At the very top of the head is the crown chakra.

It is through these two chakras that we can connection to both earth and heaven simultaneously. In that space of connection, we are grounded and supported. In that space of connection, we are open to spiritual messages and healing from the earth, and from our ancestors, loved ones in spirit, angels, guides, and guardians.

It is interesting to me that the exact location of the root chakra is, for women, the place that tears to allow a child to be born. For men, this place is directly related to the ability to create life. The location of the crown chakra is the fontanel, that soft spot that facilitated our birth. That both the base and the crown have physical connection to birth is fascinating to me. I wonder what the spiritual takeaway from that fact might be.

The feeling of connecting to earth and to heaven is, for me, a feeling of ancient power. When we think of birth, we think of something new coming into the world. Paradoxically, the energy and act of birth is as ancient as time itself.

Perhaps we can look at this this way. When we connect with the ancient and universal power of earth and heaven, we are supported in our ability to create, to heal, and to be reborn.

Guidance on the Journey

When we think of the root and the crown chakras, it is interesting to think about the Ace and Ten of Pentacles. The Ace of Pentacles connects us to the earth, and the Ten of Pentacles connects us to our ancestors.

You can use these cards in meditation to help you ground and hear the messages of your ancestors. You can hold the Ace in your right hand and the Ten in your left hand, or you can place them on your altar.

The energy of these cards can help you make those connections from which you can derive healing, energy, and spiritual support.

Is It Time to Pivot?

If something is not working, it is time to make a change. This week we explore the ways that tarot can help us make decisions, and why it is important to be open to change. This is true for big things, like jobs and relationships, and for little things, like which tarot deck to use.

Woman in a glowing dress looking at the moon

Most humans prefer to avoid change. Yet, we all know that change is the only constant in life. We also know that it makes no sense to repeatedly do something that does not work well, expecting for different results.

Tenacity can pay off. Sometimes, though, we need to change the way we do things. That need to pivot from one idea to another, or to make a change in our plans or our path, can happen for many reasons.

It could be that circumstances have changed. Businesses that used to advertise only in newspapers now need to also advertise online, for example.  It could be that what we were doing never worked well, and it is time to admit that and do something different.

We sometimes feel shame when we change our plans, or our belief systems, or our relationship commitments. We may feel we are being disloyal. We may feel a sense of failure.

Life would be so much easier if we could celebrate the courage that it takes to embrace change and to pivot to something new.
“But we’ve always done it this way!” is something people say when confronted with the need for change. Traditions matter, and consistency is valuable. Yet, sometimes a pivot is exactly what is needed to bring in new energy and new possibilities.

How do you know when it is time to pivot? When things are not working, you have to make adjustments. If those adjustments do not make things better, you may need a more drastic change.

No matter our age, or how long we have done things a specific way, we must always be ready to make proactive change.

Tarot for Decision Making

Tarot is an amazing tool to help with decision making. Often, a series of questions, with one or a few cards pulled in answer, can help us figure out when to stay, when to go, when to change, and what to do.

We can ask simple questions about our choices. Sometimes it makes sense to pull a single card for each option. This can help us see if one option is obviously favorable. This can also give us information about our options.

We can ask if a situation is likely to improve. We can ask what we can do to improve a situation. We can ask what we can do to generate new opportunities. We can ask if we are better to stay where we are, or if we are better to make a change.

Tarot cannot make our decisions for us. But tarot can help us to focus, to see our situation more clearly, and to be aware of all the factors.

Guidance on the Journey

Pivots, choices, and changes are often big decisions about big things in life. We must make decisions about smaller things, as well. What tarot deck to use, or to buy, is a question we often ask ourselves.

Most of us will end up owning more than one tarot deck. Some of us will use a deck until we wear it out, and then replace it. Others have different decks for different sorts of readings.

I make a distinction between collector decks and what I call ‘workhorse decks.’ Workhorse decks are readily available and inexpensive, easy for me to read, and comfortable for clients.

There are tarot decks I like to use for live readings on YouTube, but do not use for private clients. There are some tarot decks I reserve to use only for personal readings, or only for certain types of questions.

The bottom line is this. There is no one right way to manage a tarot collection, or to decide what deck to use for a particular reading, or a particular purpose.

There are tarot decks that are easy decks for tarot beginners.

I think some of the worst advice people commonly give tarot beginners is to choose a deck they “feel drawn to”. Very often this causes new tarotists to buy a deck with pretty pictures that are hard to understand and interpret.

Another piece of common bad advice is to switch decks if you do not like the cards you are receiving. An uncomfortable reading is not the fault of the deck, it is a reflection of the truth.

When is it time to switch decks?

Sometimes a new deck will spark intuition simply by bringing new colors and images to the eyes. I like to switch decks under two conditions. The first is when a deck is worn to the point that it stops shuffling well. The second is when I stop feeling excited by the cards.

The more decks we know, the better readers we become. This is why pivoting from one deck to another can often be a good idea.
