Holding Space for Truth
The search for truth is a lifelong journey.
We are on a constant search for truth, in big ways and in little ways.
The search for truth is part of the human journey. The problem is, we have a hard time understanding what truth is, and what it means.
We who are spiritual seekers are, first and foremost, truth seekers. The irony that is the tools that we use to find truth are also tools that some people use to defraud others, or to allow spiritual bypassing for themselves.
Even when we have access to potent knowledge and skill, we must be able to hold ourselves accountable if we truly wish to divine truth.
Whether we are seeking spiritual truth or mundane truth, we can only see the truths we allow ourselves to see.
One problem is that we often set up a condition where if one thing is true, another thing cannot be. This sort of thinking usually moves us further from the truth.
It is hard to understand that a person might love their job and hate their job at the same time. Or, that something could be both healing and damaging.
When we see that two seemingly opposite things can be true at the same time, we can learn to hold space for all possibilities. We can find our priorities. We can acknowledge all truths, but accentuate those that best support our well-being.
Sometimes it feels easier to accept a fantasy and deny the truth. It takes courage to see what we would prefer not to see. It takes patience to understand that more than one thing can be true at the same time.
There are aspects of spiritual truth that are a mystery, and must remain so. The mystery becomes the truth we must embrace.
The search for truth is not something that happens in a moment. We are always learning, and always growing in our ability to ask the right questions, and to understand the answers.

What if foods could talk? That is the question asked by Food Healing Deck creators Joanna Salerno and Lainie Sevante Wulkan.
Cartomancers are also healers. We see this combination of healing and divining brought clearly into focus with the Food Healing Deck. With these cards, we can delve into our relationship with food, and find inspiration for healing.
One of the missions of StaarCon is to introduce a wide range of tools and practices, and to shine a light on the creators of these tools.
We are excited that Joanna and Lainie will be presenting their Food Healing Deck at StaarCon 2022.

What Will Be True?
In tarot, and other divination methods, we often make future predictions. That is, we try to discover what will be true in the future.
Since possibilities for the future are always changing, predicting the future can be tricky. The future is not always set. We are able to see possibilities. We are able to gain insight and wisdom to help us strategize. We can get information that will help us set ourselves up for the best outcomes.
One of the best techniques we can use to help us predict the future with tarot is to find a certainty percentage. Here is what that means.
If we ask a question like, “Will I be married within five years?” and pull some cards, we might get cards that make us say a definite and enthusiastic yes. We also might get cards that feel more like a maybe.
We can take the level of certainty and enthusiasm we see in the cards and assign a percentage to it, to describe just how likely that particular outcome is.
If we decide that the outcome is unlikely, we can consult the cards to find strategies to make our desired outcome a reality. In that way, we are not only predicting the future, we are creating the future.

Cards for Your Consideration
Divinatory tarot is a tool for truth-seeking. We can also use tarot to help us discover and release our resistance to hard truths.
There are many cards whose interpretations speak specifically of honesty or dishonesty, and of the search for truth and understanding.
This week I would like to consider the High Priestess as such a card. When we look at the Waite-Smith image, we see that the High Priestess finds truth from many sources. She wears the symbols of many religions. She holds a sacred text. She is robed in the waters of the subconscious, which flow off the page to the right side.
She tells us that truth is found both within and without.
She sits between the pillars of mercy and severity. She finds truth in the balance of the two.

Table For One
It is a skill to enjoy the pleasure of one's own company.
We spend a lot of time discussing the importance of our relationships with family, friends, coworkers, and, of course, romantic partners.
In tarot, many of our readings are about relationship dynamics.
Our relationships are a very important part of our lives. Our partners, families, and communities bring us joy, support, comfort, and security.
Yet, there is one relationship we probably do not talk about enough. That is the relationship with the self. Sure, we discuss the importance of self-love, self-worth, and self-acceptance. However, we do not spend enough time discussing the need to enjoy our own company.
Sometimes I think there are two distinct groups of people in the world. Those who will go out and do things on their own, and those who will not.
So often I hear people complain that they want to do a particular thing, but do not have anyone with whom to do that thing. Sometimes this is because the person is single, or has not made friends. Sometimes it is because their interests are different from the interests of their friends and family.
Why are some people so hesitant to eat in a restaurant alone, or go to a movie or a concert on their own? Some people worry what others will think of them. Other people simply are not comfortable in their own company.
Doing things alone may be out of your comfort zone, but it is a wonderful thing to embrace. To learn to enjoy the pleasure of your own company is a gift that keeps on giving. To be able to enjoy something without distraction is a gift as well.
Sometimes, when we venture out on our own, we are able to make a new friend, which is always a blessing.
We often seem to fear being alone. Yes, there is safety in numbers. And loneliness is a cause of anxiety and depression. Yet, there is a difference between being lonely and being alone. When we can have confidence in our own strength and ability, we can enjoy being on our own.
When we are comfortable in our own space, we are more easily able to find the right people to share that space.
Do not be afraid to buy a single ticket, or to ask for a table for one. Strive to find the right people to spend time with, and to be comfortable spending time with yourself.

Reading Tarot for Yourself
There is a false belief that one cannot, or should not, read their own tarot cards. The truth is, if we cannot read for ourselves, we should not read for others.
When we learn how the cards show up for us, we learn how the cards speak to us.
However, there are some things to consider in self-reading.
We must be careful that our fears and desires do not influence our interpretation.
Often, it is helpful to go to the cards for matters of personal growth and contemplation, rather than for prediction.
Here are some good questions for self-reading.
What do I need to know about myself at this moment?
What is the best way for me to approach this situation?
How can I heal from this difficulty?
What skill should I focus on developing right now?

Cards for Your Consideration
When we think about loneliness, we often think about the Hermit. The Hermit also speaks of wisdom and patience. One lesson of the Hermit is that the path to wisdom is often lonely.
When we think about being comfortably alone, we often think of the Nine of Pentacles, who is the woman alone in her garden.
Could we look at all the Nine cards and find some indication of being in one’s own company?
In the Nine of Swords, we see the pain of being alone with one’s own difficult thoughts.
In the Nine of Cups, we could see the satisfaction of one’s own happiness.
In the Nine of Wands, we see the need to do one’s duty, even when that is difficult.
We can learn a great deal about being in one’s own company from the Nines of tarot.

Liminal Space
The word 'liminal' means 'threshold'. In liminal space we occupy the material world, and the spirit world, at the same time.
In the world of psychic work, tarot, and spiritual healing we use the term ‘liminal space’ quite often. I wonder how many of us understand what the word ‘liminal’ truly means?
There are two standard definitions, both of which make sense in this spiritual context.
The word ‘liminal’ is an adjective, and comes from the Latin word ‘limen’, meaning ‘threshold’.
The first definition is “relating to a transition or initial stage of a process.” We often think of those moments right before sleep as liminal space, where we are conscious, but on our way to dreaming.
The second definition is similar. Liminal can mean “occupying a position at, or on both sides of, a boundary or threshold’. The sleep analogy works in this case as well.
In meditation, divination, and healing work, we enter liminal space in order to sense energy, communicate with Spirit and to hear our guidance.
We can ‘occupy both sides of the threshold’ by being at the same time aware of our mundane surroundings, but also tuned in to the energy around us, and to the voice of spirit.
Other than going to sleep, how do we enter liminal space? Very often, slow, conscious breathing, and setting the intention to be in the space where we are able to sense energy is the best way to do this.
We are literally willing ourselves to cross the threshold from the mundane world to the magical world, or from the physical world to the spirit world.
We all have the ability to do this. Understanding the words and simple techniques makes liminal space accessible to us all.
The StaarCorner
We are excited to welcome Erika Robinson as a new presenter at StaarCon. Erika is a Reiki Master, and a reader and teacher of Lenormand. In her class, Erika will be sharing a special technique that she uses to give accurate professional readings with the Lenormand cards.
At StaarCon, it is our mission to bring you the best in mystical education, and a wide variety of topics. Erika’s class is one of two offerings this year that will focus on the Petit Lenormand, a very popular divination system. Though Lenormand is a deck of cards, the skills and techniques for reading Lenormand are very different than tarot. We are excited that Erika will be sharing her skills and knowledge with us.

Tarot Reading in Liminal Space
When conducting a tarot reading, we need to be very alert. We need to notice the cards, and how they speak to the context of the question. We need to notice trends within the cards.
If we are working with a client, we need to be aware of the client’s comfort, and of their energy.
How then, can we enter liminal space during a tarot reading?
It is important to remember that liminal space can allow us to exist in two places at once. That is, we can be on both sides of the threshold.
We can be focused and alert, yet also open to the voice of spirit.
We do that by creating sacred space, setting intention and invoking spirit prior to the reading.
We do that by paying attention to our chakras, and our breathing, throughout the reading.
We can also do that by spending time in the reading looking at the cards with a soft gaze.
When we let the gaze go soft, we activate the brow chakra, also known as the third eye. This allows our imagination and our psychic vision to bring us to liminal space.
When we occupy liminal space within a tarot reading, we are open to the voice of spirit as we interpret the cards.

Cards for Your Consideration
In the Major Arcana, I often see the Moon and the High Priestess as a card that speaks of liminal space.
In the Minor Arcana, I believe that the Four of Swords can push us to find our way into liminal space.
While the Four of Swords is often seen as a card of rest, retreat, and recovery, this card also speaks of meditation.
The Four of Swords calls us to be silent, and to silence our thoughts. The Four of Swords asks us to create a safe and private space for ourselves. This card can speak of liminal space, and advise us to practice entering that space.

Borrowing Trouble
It is not always wise to look too far into the future.
We all worry about the future. Sometimes our concern for the future forces us to make contingency plans that help us when things go wrong. Sometimes our concern encourages us to make wise decisions in the present that help us create the future we want.
Yet sometimes we worry about things in the distant future that may never happen, things that we can neither plan nor predict. My mother called this sort of worrying “borrowing trouble”. I can still hear her voice in my head.
“Let’s not borrow trouble”.
“You are borrowing trouble. We will cross that bridge when we come to it.”
Sometimes this advice shows up in tarot readings. Cards come up to remind us to stay focused on the things we can control. When we give in to dark imaginings, we are borrowing trouble.
Psychics and diviners know that the further out in the future something is, the harder it is to predict. All we can do is make the best choices now to give us the best chances for the best future possible.
When we borrow trouble, we are spending precious time and energy making ourselves feel terrible for no good reason. However, worrying about the long-term future is a very human tendency. Having my mother’s voice in my head reminding me not to borrow trouble helps me turn my attention to something more useful and pleasant. I invite you to welcome this reminder into your consciousness. The next time you find yourself worrying about a long-term future you cannot possibly see or control, let a gentle reminder warn you against borrowing trouble.

Should I Be Worried?
Whether or not it is a fair or smart question, we often ask, of ours and of others, “Should I be worried?”
What we are really asking when this question pops up is this.
Is this an imminent concern about which I need to act?
If so, what do I need to do?
Is this something for which I should prepare myself?
If so, how can I do that?
What is the best way to approach my concern?
When we break out this single question into these questions, it appears we have created a very helpful card spread! Try it with a tarot deck or oracle deck.

Cards for Your Consideration
Sometimes pretty pictures and meaningful words can do a lot to help us stay focused in the present, and to alleviate unnecessary worry for the future. This is likely why oracle decks are so popular.
One of my favorite oracles decks is Mystical Wisdom, published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc. The artist, Josephine Wall, is well known for her evocative images. Her art style makes this deck both comforting and inspiring.
While some of the cards in this deck contain challenging messages, they are worded and illustrated in a way that calls us to positive action, rather than sending us into a pit of worry and despair.
Divination is often a good remedy for anxious thinking. Divination with a lovely oracle deck can calm even the most nervous mind and bring us to a state of peace and productivity.
