Honor and Release the Past
This week we explore how to heal from the trauma of the past, while honoring our history.
Mercury goes direct on June 23, concluded another cycle of Mercury retrograde.
One of the most helpful aspects of Mercury retrograde is that it offers support for reviewing the past, and for releasing the pain of disappointment and trauma that many of us carry.
Our relationship with our own past, and with history, can be defining of who we are as individuals, and as families, cultures, and nations.
We often find ourselves torn between maintaining time-honored traditions and creating new ways that are more helpful and supportive.
Happy memories of the past are bittersweet. It is easy to compare the stress of our current situations with the way we remember the past. When this happens, we may find the present lacking.
It can be hard to acknowledge our trespasses of the past. That is, things we did then which we regret now.
As individuals and as communities, we are constantly reinventing ourselves. We cannot change the past, nor can we return there. We cannot spend the present mired in either the trauma of the past, nor in nostalgia. Neither can we deny our past wrongdoings.
We must find a way to honor the past, learn from it, and release the pain of past trauma.
Only then can we find our way to a better future.
Processing the past can be difficult. We hold such a variety of emotions about the things in our rear view mirror. We may regret our actions, or the actions of others. We may wonder how things in the present would be different if we had made different decisions in the past.
Perhaps the best way to process the past is to appreciate that, with all its beauty and its flaws, it is what has brought us to where we are, and who we are. If we can embrace our journey to get where we are, we can have some measure of control about where we go next.

The Week in Review
This week I wrote a blogpost about the voice of intuition. Contrary to popular opinion, the first thought that comes to you when you are in divination or seeking truth may not be the voice of intuition.
Because I was traveling this past week, I was unable to keep my regular schedule of live broadcasts on my YouTube channel. I will be back this week with live readings, and a free tarot class!

Cards for Your Consideration
Any tarot card can appear in a reading to help us understand and process the past. Yet, there are two tarot cards that can speak specifically of the past.
The first and most obvious is the Six of Cups. The Six of Cups is the card of nostalgia, reunion, and happy memories.
A less-often mentioned card in this context that speaks of the past is Major Arcana 20, Judgment.
Judgment often appears to discuss the need for emotional closure when difficult changes happen. Judgment can describe the process of evaluating our past performance, and of recognizing our past success. Judgment can refer to the final analysis and the end of an era. Judgment offers the opportunity to heal from past trauma.

To Be the Bigger Person
This week we explore ways to handle difficult people, and how tarot helps us do that.
When we speak of ‘being the bigger person’, we are not speaking of body weight or size. ‘Being the bigger person’ is an expression that speaks of magnanimity, compassion, and forgiveness.
Being the bigger person means that we do not respond to pettiness, rudeness, or immaturity in kind.
Most of us were raised to believe that there is inherent moral goodness in being the bigger person. It can also be in our own best interest to be generous and compassionate. When our personal brand includes a reputation for rising above petty behaviors, there are rewards. We earn the trust and respect of those around us.
Sometimes it feels draining to always be the one to have to rise above the bad behavior of others.
“Why do I always have to be the bigger person?”
“Must I give a pass to this sort of behavior?”
These are questions that arise at the tarot table quite often.
It is understandable to be frustrated with the bad behavior of others. It is normal to struggle against the desire to fight fire with fire.
There is a deeper issue here, too. Being the bigger person should not mean being forced to tolerate abuse. Being the bigger person does not mean allowing others to push past our boundaries.
There is a certain amount of strategy involved in deciding how we need to react to insult, overstepping, or unfair behavior. It matters who the perpetrator is to us. Their intentions matter, and their capability to understand the harm they have caused matters.
Sometimes we need to be the bigger person because we simply are the bigger person. We can take spiritual comfort in the fact that we have a greater capacity for kindness and understanding than some other people do.
Sometimes being the bigger person means having the courage to stand up to a bully, come to someone’s defense, or call out a harmful behavior.
Sometimes strategy dictates that we pick the reaction that is likely to give us the best outcome.
What it means to be the bigger person may change according to the situation. Yet, there is one thing that never changes. That is our need to be clear about the motivation for our own responses. When we need to respond to something unpleasant, we need to check in with our higher self. Are we being reactive, or proactive? Are we acting out of hurt, or out of wisdom?
What is the best possible outcome for this situation, and how can we achieve that?
In the end, that is what it means to be the bigger person.

Tarot Helps Us Do the Right Thing
When we have a moral quandary and are not sure how to respond to a difficult interpersonal situation, tarot can help!
It is a good practice to ask helpful questions of the cards, and to pull a single card, or a few cards, to answer each question.
When the issue is with a person, you might ask questions about what is motivating that person, or the best way to hand that person.
You might ask questions about what the best possible outcome is, and how to achieve that outcome.
You might even as a question as general as “What is the right thing for me to do in this situation?”
If you are feeling sad, angry, or bitter, you can ask the cards for ways to process your feelings.

Cards for Your Consideration
Which tarot card might ask us to be the bigger person? I think there are many! Major Arcana 8, Strength, comes to mind as a card of compassion. The Six of Pentacles might tell us to be charitable.
There are also cards which tell us to have good boundaries, such as the Seven of Wands and the Four of Pentacles.
Justice, the Ace of Swords, and the Knight of Swords tell us to do the right thing. Sometimes the right thing means standing up, sometimes it means drawing a boundary, and sometimes it means being gracious and forgiving.

Visions and Revisions
T.S. Elliot and Mercury retrograde inspire some thoughts on how we manifest our future.
This week our newsletter theme comes from one of my favorite poems, “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock”, by T.S. Eliot.
“Prufrock”, as it is affectionately known, is a complex poem. I had to write a paper about it in high school. Maybe you did, too. One of the many themes of “Prufrock” considers the passage of time from the perspective of impending old age.
We always wonder if we will have enough time. We worry we will not have time for little things in a day or a week, and for big things, like being able to create the future we envision for ourselves.
The verse from “Prufrock” reads,
And indeed there will be time…
…Time for you and time for me,
And time yet for a hundred indecisions,
And for a hundred visions and revisions,
Before the taking of a toast and tea.
I thought of these words this week as we entered Mercury retrograde. While Mercury retrograde is something often feared, Mercury retrograde offers us a wonderful opportunity for visions and revisions.
These next few weeks are a time to review, to revisit, and to process the past. For creative people especially, Mercury retrograde lends itself to the process of editing, and re-envisioning our projects.
This week, let us take the time for visions and revisions. What is your vision for your life? How is that vision changing? How can you refine your goals and perspectives, to fit the you that you have become?
The worry that there will not be enough time is part of this process. We must make the time, and take the time, to craft our vision. Creation takes time. Manifestation takes time.
We must remember that our vision is worth revision, and worthy of the time it takes to get it right.

Cards for Your Consideration
What is ‘vision’ as a concept? It is neither eyesight nor psychic vision. Rather, it is how we want something to look and be. ‘Vision’, in this context, is a way of creatively looking toward our future, and toward the future we wish to manifest.
What card might speak of this sort of vision? For me, it is the Two of Wands, in any tarot deck. The Two of Wands asks us to look at the world we want to create, and what we want to create in the world. The Two of Wands asks us to use our imagination to dream, to plot and to plan. The Two of Wands asks us to take our time to set our vision and manifest our future.

Validation
We use divination to validate our thoughts and feelings. Here are some divination methods to help us validate our interpretations of the readings we perform.
A tarot reading can be healing in many ways. One of the ways that a tarot reading heals is by providing validation to the client.
The reading may give voice and form to something the client had been feeling, yet was unable to express. The reading may validate the choices the client is making.
Relationships become abusive when partners are unable to validate the feelings of the other, telling them that they have no right or reason to feel as they do. Families can become toxic when parents incessantly question the choices of their adult kids, refusing to validate their choices, beliefs, and ideals.
The root word of ‘validation’ is ‘valid’. When we deny ourselves validation, we are literally denying ourselves the right to feel like a valid human being.
This does not mean that we are never off-base in our understanding of a situation. Sometimes our feelings are based on misunderstanding, or a faulty assessment of a situation. Sometimes we base our beliefs on something that is untrue.
We cannot validate beliefs and actions that are based on something false. Yet, we can still acknowledge the validity of the person who holds those false understandings.
Tarot can help us in this way, too. Sometimes a tarot reading can uncover a falsehood. Sometimes a reading can give us a new perspective that is based on greater truth.
We are all seeking spiritual truth, which is something that can only be validated in the heart, in faith.
We are all seeking a sense of purpose and place. Perhaps a sign of true healing is when we no longer look to others to give us a sense of validation. We need to be able to sense that we are on our path and belong where we are.
When others try to take that validation away from us, we must find ways to be strong and stand our ground.
Validation is mystical, personal, and practical. It is not something we always think about. Yet, validation is something that matters every single day.

How to Use Clarifying Cards to Validate a Tarot Reading
In modern tarot, a lot of people use clarifying cards, or ‘clarifiers’ in their tarot readings. There are many methods for this. I wrote about clarifying cards on my blog, and I recently taught a class on them on YouTube.
Here is one method that works well if there is a particular card in a spread that you are unsure how to interpret. Perhaps the Ten of Swords appears, and you wonder what area of life that energy is going to be making an appearance.
Take the rest of your deck, and ask the question, “What do I need to know about this card?” or “What is this card all about?”
Pull a card and place it next to the card in question. How does this help you process and understand your reading?
If you need another card, you can add to the information by pulling a second card to clarify. After that, if you are still not sure about the original confusing card, move on with the reading. As things unfold the meaning of the card will become clear, and you will see how the clarifying cards play a role in the story.
This method will help you validate your interpretation of confusing cards in a tarot reading.

As of May 29, I will be back in my Palm City office, and resuming my regular schedule of live readings on my YouTube channel. Channel members can expect some special videos just for them as well!
On June 4, the Palm City office will reopen to the public, so make your appointment now!

I found this article on understanding validation on Psychology Today.
Mercury retrograde begins on May 29 and lasts until June 22. Here is a Tarot Spread for Mercury Retrograde from WolfSister.
From Little Red Tarot, here is a great two-card tarot spread for clarity and validation.
Cards for Your Consideration
This week I am asking you to consider, in addition to your cards, another tool which is great for validation work. That is, to check to see if your thinking, your decision, your card reading, your intuition, is correct.
The tool I am referring to is the pendulum. Dowsing with a pendulum is an intuitive art which takes only a minute to learn. However, with study you can discover many techniques to use your pendulum for readings and for healing work.
The pendulum is a very good adjunct to a tarot reading. Check out my class on Tarot and Pendulum on YouTube.
Very often we want validation of a particular idea. A pendulum is a wonderful way to get a quick yes or no from the universe. As you study pendulum work, you will discover many ways to use your pendulum on a deeper level.
