Communication

Mercury is in retrograde for most of the month of October this year. One of the most important aspects of Mercury, the “messenger of the gods,” is communication.

When Mercury is in retrograde, it is easy to misspeak, and to be misunderstood. Connections are harder to make and easier to lose.

Rather than panicking about the potential problems Mercury’s retrograde might reflect, why not use this time to improve your communication skills?

This month, make sure you speak clearly, and listen well. Remember the way cultural differences change our communications. Listen with your heart, even when there is a language barrier or a cultural disconnect.

So many times communication is difficult because we are afraid of saying what we are feeling. Remember that tone and word choice make a difference. Think before you speak, and speak in a way that people can really hear you.

The Suit of Swords: Thoughts and Words

There are few mere coincidences in tarot. That we are studying the suit of Swords in the “Learning Tarot” section of this newsletter during Mercury retrograde is a simple example of how the right cards will always be present at the right time.

The suit of Swords in tarot is often misunderstood as the suit of “fighting” or the suit of “sorrow.” Truly, since the suit of Swords relates to the element of Air, the Swords cards are about our thoughts and our words.

The next time you see a difficult Swords card in a reading, think about the Swords in the image as the thoughts and words that might be hurting you.

In this way, tarot becomes a source of healing. As we identify the source of our pain, we are often able to adjust our thinking to bring healing.

The Week in Review

This week, on my Dark Forest blog, I posted a list of resources to help you understand Mercury retrograde.

On my Tarot Topics Community Blog, I shared a tarot exercise to assist you in finding balance.

On my personal blog, Tarot Trends, I shared an important post to help you vet a tarot professional.

From Around the Web

Here’s another great post form Zuri at AskZuri.com, about Mercury retrograde. Read “Seven Ways to Successfully Navigate Mercury Retrograde.”

Like me, Arwen Lynch is a blogger on PaganSquare. I really enjoyed her new “TarotCopes” for October. I think you will too.

Here’s an article for tarotists. Love Dove Tarot shares “Eleven Love Tarot Reading Blunders you will want to Avoid.” I am not sure I complete agree with some of these perspectives, but it is always great to see what other readers think. I would love to hear your thoughts on this one!

Using Tarot to Communicate Feelings

Tarot is a great tool for communication. You can use the cards to help you understand and communicate from the heart.

Start by looking through your deck. Think about the feelings each card might describe. For instance, the High Priestess could describe a feeling of serenity, the Nine of Pentacles could describe security, or the Four of Swords could describe tiredness.

Now look through all your cards, and pick the one that describes the way you are feeling at a particular moment.

How does looking at this image help you understand your feelings, and communicate them?

If you are having a hard time communicating with someone, ask the cards to help you understand that person. Think about the person and ask the question “What is this person feeling?” Pull a card at random.

How does the card help you to understand and communicate with this person?

Sometimes we aren’t sure how we really feel about something. When you are unsure about your feelings on a particular topic, ask the question “How do I really feel in my heart about this subject?” and pull a card at random.

How does the card help you understand and communicate your heart?

Learning Tarot: Four of Swords

In tarot, Four is a number of stability. In the airy, mental suit of Swords, that stability appears in the form of retreat.

In the Three of Swords we see an injury. In the Four of Swords we see a space where healing can take place. While the image in the Four of Swords may look somewhat dire, the Four of Swords can indicate recovery as easily as it might indicate something less pleasant.

Key words for the Four of Swords include tiredness, rest, recovery, emptiness, absence, solitude, retreat and meditation.

The Four of Swords may appear in a reading to indicate a person’s absence. The Four of Swords may appear to instruct you to let go of something, to give something a rest. The Four of Swords may encourage meditation and introspection.

When the Four of Swords appears, you may need to retreat from an uncomfortable situation. It may be time to focus on your own well-being.

Next week we will take the next step in the Suit of Swords when we prepare for battle in the Five of Swords.

Your One-Card Weekly Reading

Your one-card reading this week is the Two of Cups. This week, work to find your own emotional balance.

Often, the Two of Cups is a predictor of romance.

If you are in a relationship, you may find an opportunity for romance and quality time together.

If you are single, the Two of Cups can predict a new opportunity in love.

The Two of Cups reminds us of the importance of love in all its forms. Self-esteem, family, friendships and the love of our animal companions are all reflected in this card.

This week, keep love in your heart. Find closure to the things that have caused you pain, and embrace the healing nature of love.

Confidence

Whether you are looking for a job, playing golf, dating or playing music, sometimes confidence is one of the most important qualities to have. There is no way to describe what confidence looks like, or what lack of confidence looks like, but we can all spot it a mile away.

Often, confidence is born of knowledge, study and experience. We are confident because we know what we are doing. The lesson there is simple. If you want to be confident, do your homework.

If we are going to grow and expand, sometimes we will have to stretch a little and do new things. Then, we don’t have the experience to help boost our confidence. When that happens you simply need to have confidence in yourself.

The funny thing about confidence is it is self-perpetuating. The more confident you are, the more successful you will be. The more successful you are, the more confident you will be.

Three Ways to Read Tarot with Confidence

Whether you are an aspiring tarot professional or simply an eager enthusiast, you want to feel confident when you lay your cards on the table. Here are three things to help you build your confidence as a tarot reader.

1.       Study the cards.

The more you know the cards, the more you can simply and easily speak of them when they come up in a reading. By saying the name of the card and giving a basic interpretation you start the process of the reading, and get the energy flowing.

On a more practical level, your knowledge of the cards will give you confidence when you interpret the cards.

2.       Listen to Your Intuition.

Within reason, say what you think, feel and see. The more you can trust your inner knowing, the more confident you will be. If you truly believe that tarot reading is a sacred process that accesses wisdom from a higher source, you should be free to read with confidence.

3.       Keep your expectations open.

When you go to the cards, for yourself or for another, be open to how the cards will work, and how they will answer your questions. The more open you are, the more information you will receive, and the more confident you will be.

Confidence is important in tarot reading. Without confidence, we often feel anxious. When we are anxious it is hard to tune in to our intuition. The more confident we are in our knowledge of the cards and our understanding of the process, the more value we will find in our work with the tarot.

The Week in Review

This week on my Dark Forest blog I wrote a post for Father’s Day. Read “Three Ways to be a Great Dad.”

On my personal blog, Tarot Trends, I reviewed Ambika Devi’s new book, “Lilith.”

On my Tarot Topics Community Blog, I answered another question about tarot. Read the post and watch the video about what I wish I had known when I first became a tarot professional.

Did you get a chance to catch me on Tarot Dactyl’s “There’s a Rock for That” a few weeks ago? If not, you can listen in archive!

From Around the Web

I am not always a fan of the articles on SpiritScience.net. Often they seem to have a bit more spirit than science. However, I know a few people who might find these tips for sensitive people helpful.

Fiona Benjamin has written a really poignant post about coming out of the tarot closet.

From Alison Cross, a short piece about “Tarot in Art.” I am always fascinated to see how tarot is, and has been, represented in art and culture.

Confidence Tarot Spread

So many tarot cards advise us to be confident in ourselves and in our abilities. The Sun is perhaps the ultimate card of confidence, but the King of Wands, Nine of Pentacles and Six of Wands also suggest an air of confidence, or reasons to be confident.

This tarot spread is about nurturing inner confidence. Performing this spread will help you find ways to be more confident in yourself, whatever you do.

The spread is three cards in a row.

Card one will show a skill, ability or strength that you have, and need to have more confidence in.

Card two will show you something you need to believe about yourself in order to be confident.

Card three will advise you of something to think about or do when you need a boost of confidence.

Learning Tarot: Two of Cups

In the Two of Cups we see a partnership. This can be a friendship, a love relationship, or even a heart-centered business partnership.

Key words for the Two of Cups are “perfect love” and “perfect partnership.”

The Two of Cups can be about being a good partner to oneself. This card can indicate self-esteem, or, when ill-dignified, issues with self-esteem.

In the Rider Waite Smith (RWS) image, we see the caduceus, a symbol of healing. From this symbol we understand that this card can speak of the healing power of love.

Typically, the number two in tarot can indicate partnership, duality, balance and choices. The suit of Cups, of course, is related to the element of Water, and therefore love and emotion.

It is easy to look at the Two of Cups and see it as a card of romantic partnership. This card could predict a relationship for a single person, or describe a happy romantic relationship.

Sometimes the Two of Cups might indicate the need to find a balance in a relationship. This card could also predict a reunion, or suggest that a decision must be made within a relationship.

Next week we will continue our journey through the element of Water and the suit of Cups with the Three of Cups.

Your One-Card Weekly Reading

Your One-Card Weekly Reading is the Ace of Swords. This is a particularly good card to receive during Mercury retrograde, when wires can easily get crossed and communication can quickly break down.

The Ace of Swords is a reminder to do the right thing, and to do things the right way.

The Ace of Swords asks you to check in with yourself and know what is true and right for you.

The Ace of Swords tells you to be honest in all your dealings.

The Ace of Swords advises you to speak your truth when you need to.

This week, trust yourself, and listen to your inner truth. Act with integrity in all things. Take the time to discover what is really true, rather than what you believe to be true, or are told is true.

The Ace of Swords tells us that the truth is there, and the right way is clear. We only have to seek it.

The Four Elements and the Major Arcana

The four elements of life are Earth, Air, Fire and Water. They each have metaphysical properties as well as physical properties.

The four elements correlate with the four suits of the Minor Arcana of the tarot. They also correlate with individual cards of the Major Arcana.

The term “Major Arcana” means “Greater Secrets.” The twenty-two cards of the Major Arcana contain the most spiritual messages and lessons of the tarot, and tell the story of our journey through life.

When we learn the elemental associations for each of the Major Arcana cards, we have a clear way to understand these important cards.

This 75 minute webinar will help the tarot student more fully understand the four elements. It will provide a deeper way to comprehend each of the Major Arcana cards. The student will be able to more fully interpret the Major Arcana cards, whether reading for yourself or others.

Giving Thanks

Thanksgiving was my mother's least favorite holiday. While she enjoyed the gathering of friends and family and the concept of gratitude, she felt Thanksgiving had become simply a holiday of gluttony, housework and a meal she didn't particularly enjoy.
Over the years I have celebrated Thanksgiving in a multitude of non-traditional ways. Here's what I've learned.  It doesn't matter what you eat, where you go, or what you do.
And, while Thanksgiving is an American holiday, many cultures have similar holidays in that same tradition of giving thanks.
The meaning of Thanksgiving is all in its name - giving thanks. Sometimes we focus more on what we wish we have than what we do have. We use the holiday as a time to take an accounting of the things that are missing from our lives.
Perhaps the thing to do is to give thanks for what we do have, and to put our energy in to manifesting that which we desire. Sometimes we can have gratitude for the things we have yet to receive.

Definitions and Stories, the Fool and the Magician

I believe that most of us spend our entire adult life healing from the first twenty years. This is sometimes true even when we have great parents and few tragedies.
Although childhood is often thought of as a time of exploration, wonder and growth, it can also be a time of bewilderment, misunderstanding and loneliness.
Sometimes, as adults, we use the things that hurt us in childhood to define ourselves in adulthood.
Sometimes we let bullies and abusers shape our sense of self-worth.
Sometimes we let negative people define our limitations.
After a while, it is no longer the fault of the abuser or the bully. It is our own fault for allowing ourselves to become victim to it.
We when tell the stories of our past, we can cast ourselves as the victim, or as the survivor.
In the end, it doesn't matter what has happened in the past. What matters is how we let our past define us.
Like the Fool in tarot, we are always on a journey. We are always the star of our own show, the hero of our own story.
To have the most successful journey, and the happiest story, we can't let others define our character. We can let the limited thinking of others limit us.
When we look at the Fool card, we see him merrily ready to begin his journey by stepping off a cliff. It is that sort of bold faith that makes for the very best journeys in life.
How do you define yourself? How do you count your tools, your abilities and your skills?
When we look at the Magician card, we see that the Magician has the ability to channel power from Heaven to Earth and back again. We see that he has on his table all the tools he needs. We see him committed to the task of wielding his tools, and sharpening his skills.
Both the Fool and the Magician display a sort of life-defining confidence; an ability to chart one's course and create one's own destiny.
Each of us has the ability to do the same.
Don't let others define who you are.
Be the survivor, not the victim.
Tell your story in a way that empowers you.
Manifest your destiny.

Tarot Foods

Since Thanksgiving is so often celebrated as a food holiday, I thought it would be fun to share some tarot traditions regarding food.

Many people enjoy crafting tarot symbols out of food. For the annual Pocono Tarot Picnic our resident baker, Regina, would always make the four tools (Wand, Cup, Sword, Pentacle) in bread.

There is even a recipe tarot deck called the Epicurean Tarot by Corrine Kenner. Each of the 78 cards has a recipe to go with it.

I personally enjoy tarot potluck dinners where each person has to come up with a cleverly named dish. At past potlucks we have enjoyed Death Chili, Hermit Cookies, Pentacle Pie, Two of Pentacles Pizza, Eight of Wands Chicken Teriyaki and Tower Chocolate Cake.

In a reading, tarot cards can often be interpreted to discuss issues of weight loss and dietary change; although we all know that a doctor must be consulted to create a good weight loss plan.

We can even divide the four suits of the Minor Arcana to discuss different types of food - Wands can be spicy foods, Cups can be liquid foods (juicing), Pentacles can be fruits, nuts and vegetables from the garden and Swords can be meat, for instance.

Many tarotists have used the cards to create healthier relationships with food for themselves and their clients.

So whether you use tarot and food together to pursue healing or to pursue fun, explore the many connections you can make between tarot and food!

Your Weekly One-Card Reading

Your one card weekly reading is the Two of Cups. This is the card of perfect love, perfect partnership, and the healing nature of love.

When this card comes up in a reading, it can predict a wonderful romance. It can also indicate the need for self-esteem. It can remind us that love is everywhere.
The early Greeks had many words for love. Often, when we speak of love, we speak only of romantic love. But there are many kinds of love. We love our friends, our family, our pets, our country and our Higher Power. The more we love, the more we draw love to us.
This week, focus on love in all its forms.
