What Never Stops

Time is always passing, and always changing us. Yet some things remain eternal.

Four happy senior citizens having fun in colorful clothing.

I have a big birthday coming up this fall. It’s one of those numbers that ends in zero and feels impossible. At the very same time, I am having so much fun with my new grandbabies, who are now no longer preemies, and are developing and growing and learning every day.

All this has me thinking about the different stages of life, what changes, what ends, and, maybe most importantly, the things that never stop.

There are so many differences between people of different ages. Yet, there are some things that can and should go on forever in our lives.

I get frustrated with people who use age as an excuse to refuse to learn new things, when our curiosity and ability to learn and grow (absent of cognitive decline, of course) should never stop.

I feel sad for people who have stopped feeling love for their partners, when our ability to love never stops, and has the potential to deepen over time.

I can tell you that as I grow older, I have no desire, and no plans, to stop the work I do, which is so important to me and defining of my life.

Of course, there are some things we smartly and logistically become too old to do. There is a privilege that comes with each age which allows us to relinquish certain thoughts, responsibilities, and activities. Beyond that, though, I am much more interested in the things that bring us so much joy they never stop, and we never want them to stop.

What are the things that never stop for most of us? Our love of family, our enjoyment of nature, our creativity, and our inspiration. For some of us, our work. For others, travel.

What are the things you never want to stop doing and enjoying?

Whatever our current age, the more we focus on our eternal and ongoing passions, the more engaged and vital will be, for as long as we live.

What to Keep, and What to Let Go

As we get older, there is always the question of what to keep and what to let go. This process starts when we are toddlers and continues throughout life. If there is an activity, relationship, or ideal that we think we might be outgrowing, tarot can help us determine whether we need to lean in or let go. We can simply think of the thing in question, and pull some cards to see what value, or what danger, it holds for us going forward.

We can also, at any time, perform a simple two-card spread. Let the first card be what happens if you let something go, and the second card be what happens if you keep it.

Guidance on the Journey

There are many tarot cards that help us understand our relationship to time. For example, the Hermit and Temperance can both remind us to take our time, and to be patient.

The Six of Cups may speak of nostalgia, or a longing for the past. In some contexts, the Six of Cups could remind us of the essence of who we are, no matter how much time has passed.

The Knight of Pentacles may speak of the slow passage of time. The Knight of Swords and the Eight of Wands may both recommend swift action and speak of things that happen quickly. The Wheel of Fortune and the Eight of Pentacles may both speak of things that repeat time after time.

What cards might speak of the things that do not change and do not stop over time? I think this is a very personal question because it could be different for everyone. It is interesting to note, however, that the infinity symbol, or lemniscate, appears on four different cards in the Waite Smith Tarot. Those cards are the Magician, Strength, the World, and the Two of Pentacles. Perhaps these cards may give us a clue about the things that remain eternal for us all.

Always a Journey

This week I share some thoughts as I travel throughout the Northeast on Tarot Tour. Life is always a journeys and never a destination.

A woman walking down a grassy path

We use the word ‘journey’ to talk about travel. We also use this word to discuss a metaphoric journey, such as our educational journey or our journey with an illness.

Poets, philosophers, and songwriters have written about life as a journey.

I think this is a good way to think about life. Rather than cataloging our mistakes and heartbreaks, we can see each difficulty and each joy as an important part of our journey.

Ralph Waldo Emerson is credited with the well-known expression, “life is a journey, not a destination”. While setting goals is good, the only goal we are sure we will meet is to be present on the journey.

When we remember that life is always a journey, we remember that travel is sometimes arduous, sometimes smooth, sometimes fun, and sometimes educational. We can be prepared for whatever we might encounter on the road ahead.

The Fool’s Journey is Your Journey

When we learn tarot, we often speak of the cards as “The Fool’s Journey”. This term was coined by Eden Gray in the late 1960s. The concept that the Fool is the star of the story told by tarot, and the other seventy-seven cards represent the experiences and lessons along the Fool’s Path is now considered a primary way of understanding tarot.

We can learn a lot about our own journeys in life by studying the Fool’s journey.

Sometimes divination and study can go hand in hand.

Shuffle your tarot deck. Ask for a card that helps you understand something about your journey in life. Pull one card at random. Think about what the Fool learns from that card. Then consider how that card makes sense on your own journey.

What the Court Cards Want You to Know

On Wednesday, June 29, 7 pm to 9 pm, join us for a hybrid tarot class about the tarot Court cards. You can attend in Person in Palm City or online on Zoom.

The sixteen Court cards, typically called Pages, Knights, Queens and Kings, can be some of the most confusing cards in the tarot deck.

This is because these cards are very versatile. They can reference the people around you. They can also reference parts of yourself. They can behave like any other tarot card and offer advice, comment, and prediction.

In this two-hour class you will learn easy ways to understand and work with these sixteen cards.

You can join us in person or online. Every student will receive access to a recording of the class. Visit EventBrite to purchase your ticket.

The class will be available at cardandcraftacademy.com after July 8th.

The Chariot tarot card

Guidance on the Journey

Can tarot cards that traditionally reference travel also be interpreted to represent the journey through life, or any metaphoric journey? I would say yes, though some more than others.

For me, the Chariot is a card that often indicates travel. All four Knights can speak of travel as well. The World can speak of international travel.

Traditionally, some people see the Six of Swords as travel, as well as the Eight of Cups. I am less likely to interpret those cards as a literal trip.

The card that most often will speak to me of the journey of life, or a metaphoric journey, is the Fool.

Which cards often speak to you of travel? Which cards indicate a need to view life as a journey, or to focus on a metaphoric journey? How much overlap exists for you between these groups of cards?

When it comes to how the cards speak to each of us, we all have our own personal relationship with each card. Yet, we will all have cards in our personal tarot vocabulary that reference each aspect of life. Literal travel and metaphoric journeys are often themes in tarot readings, even if the cards that express these things may differ from reader to reader.

When we discuss literal travel in a reading, we might be predicting a vacation, or a business trip. When we discuss a metaphoric journey we may be using the cards to help frame a chapter in life in order to find ways to cope, or ways to make the most of a specific undertaking.

The Right Moment

It is hard to know when the moment is right to make a change or execute a plan. Logic, intuition, and courage must align to find and seize the right moment.

A collage of a daydreaming woman and clocks

Timing is everything. When we are ready to make a change, seize an opportunity, or have an important conversation, we must feel that the time is right.

Sometimes it is hard to know when the right moment is, or if the right moment will ever come.

Often, the moment is right, but we do not feel ready.

When we look to the past with regret, it is often because of something we failed to do, chose not to do, or forgot to do. For whatever reason, the moment did not feel right, or we did not feel ready.

Regret is never helpful. Whether it is entirely true or not, it feels good to tell ourselves that we did not do something because we just were not ready.

The problem is, sometimes there is a window of opportunity that is only open for a certain time.

We cannot change what we did or did not do in the past. What we can do is be very aware of the present moment. We must act when the time is right. Sometimes, we must do this whether or not we feel ready.

But how do we know the when the moment is right?

There is a combination of logic and intuition that can let us know it is time to move. It may be that the window of opportunity is closing, so there is no choice. It may be that the moment feels right. It may be that divination and signs from the universe seem to give the go ahead.

We must learn to pay attention, use logic, intuition, and divination, and be willing to take a leap before we feel ready. Then, we will seize the right moment for the right opportunities.

Is the Moment Right? Find Out with Tarot

If you are planning to do something and want to know when the right time will be, divination can help. Astrology can give information about auspicious timing. A pendulum can let you know if the right moment is now.

Asking the correct questions of tarot can give a great deal of insight when it comes to timing the execution of your plan.

Here are some helpful questions to ask.

What happens if I do this right now?

What happens if I wait?

What happens if I do this in three months?

What signs will tell me the time is right?

Guidance on The Journey

Most tarotists agree that predicting timing is one of the hardest things to do. Yet, when we look to tarot cards to give us information about qualities of time rather than quantities of time, we can often get valuable information about when the right moment will be.

For example, the Knight of Swords and the Eight of Wands suggest swift action. The Knight of Pentacles advises us to take our time. Temperance, the High Priestess, and the Hermit all advise patience. The Aces may tell us to strike while the iron is hot.

When you are working with your tarot cards, consider which cards are slow, and which are quick. Which cards advise action, and which cards advise us to wait?

Things of Quality Have No Fear of Time

This week we explore time and tarot.

Things of Quality Have No Fear of Time

Some things are worth the wait

This week a friend on Instagram reminded me that I often use this quote. That’s because it makes so much sense to me, on so many levels.

I whisper it to myself when I am running woefully behind on a self-imposed writing deadline. I say it again to myself when I look in the mirror and see the signs of age that seem to emerge almost daily. I say it yet again to justify spending a bit of money on something that is built to last, rather than something cheaper and disposable. I say it to my clients who are impatiently waiting for a good thing that I see coming to them – a new relationship, a new job, or healing of body, mind and spirit.

None can escape the passage of time, and so often we worry that we have missed the boat, that we are running out of time, that we aren’t moving quickly enough. It’s true that time will wait for none of us, and some things do have an expiration date. Yet, there is a blessing that happens when we can gracefully accept that good things are worth the wait and that doing good work is worth the extra time.

Time adds value to some things. We see this with cheese, wine, and lovely antiques. When we allow ourselves to have the perspective that time adds value to our lives, rather than slowly stealing our lives away, our lives become much richer.

Too Late Tarot Reading

Sometimes we wonder if we have let too much time pass. Is it too late to start a business, or go back to school, or fall in love?

I often think that people don’t do what they want to do because the think it’s too late, when it’s really not.

It’s a good practice to check in with tarot, either by reading for yourself or getting a reading with a talented professional, to see if you still have time to make something happen.

If you want to read for yourself, simply shuffle and ask a question like, “Can I make this happen?”

When I have done this for others, I have sometimes been surprised by the answers I’ve received. I have seen that middle-aged people could change their careers, and then I have watched them actually do it successfully. I’ve seen older women become parents. I’ve seen senior citizens finally find the love of their lives.

Sometimes we try to talk ourselves out of trying for something because we believe our time has passed. If we are indeed too late, tarot may suggest something else for us to do.

But sometimes, tarot will encourage us to go for it. In my experience, when that happens, the possibilities for success are much better than we may have thought.

The Week in Review

This week I started something new – Three-card tarot readings on Facebook Live, archived on my YouTube channel. Check out my Three Card Spread in honor of Star Wars Day, and three cards for the week of May 6-12.

AdobeStock_91104504-2500x1667.jpg

Cards for Your Consideration

This week, I would like you to consider five cards that can often speak of time. The first two are from the Major Arcana. The Hermit, Major Arcana 9, is known as ‘Father Time’. The lantern he carries was originally an hourglass. It became a lantern at a time when candles were used as timekeepers. Therefore, he now carries the light of wisdom that is also a clock. The message here is of the wisdom that is acquired over time, and that it is often wise to be patient.

Three common keywords for Major Arcana 14, Temperance, are art, alchemy and time. Temperance tells us that time is one of the ingredients needed to create the recipe for the perfect blend, the right solution and the correct balance in life.

The next two cards are both Knights, one fast, one slow. The Knight of Pentacles is the slowest of the Knights. He reminds us to take our time and tells us that things may happen slowly. The Knight of Swords is the quickest of the Knights and may tell us that something is coming quickly, or that we need to act with all speed.

Our final card is the Eight of Wands, which is all about fast action. It heralds quick change and fast news. The Eight of Wands advises that you be swift.

Predicting time with tarot can be challenging. These five cards can help us understand our relationship with time. These cards can often let us know whether things will happen quickly, or whether we will be practicing patience as we wait for what comes next.
