The Only Constant
This week, we are talking about the inevitability of change.
Years ago, I worked for a radio station. I knew something big had happened when, upon walking in one morning, I saw that an inspirational poster had been hung in a prominent spot. It read, “The Only Constant is Change”. I discovered there had been a huge personnel change overnight. At that moment, I thought the poster was a cheesy attempt to motivate us during a difficult time. In retrospect, I must admit that I have used that phrase to motivate myself countless times over the years after first seeing it that day.
We spiritual people talk about change all the time. We want to shift, transform, transmute, and evolve. We want personal change and social change. We want metamorphosis. We know that when we say that change is the only constant, we are also saying that a refusal to change leaves us stuck.
Change comes in two forms: the changes we choose and the changes that are forced upon us.
Sometimes, we forget that change, though necessary, is always hard. Even when we choose a carefully thought-out evolution, there may be grief, fear, guilt, and regret.
When change comes against our will, it can be even worse. Then, we must either accept or resist. Often, we resist at first and then slowly accept the inevitable.
Everything in nature is designed to change, including we humans. Yet, we get comfortable in what we know, even when what we know isn’t what we want.
To embrace change, we must embrace discomfort. We must also embrace the fact that resisting change will bring even more discomfort in the long run.

Two Cards of Change
One of the first things we learn as beginning tarot students is not to fear Major Arcana 13, “The Death Card.” We are taught that while the lesson of Death is to accept all the cycles of nature, when Death appears in divination, it is likely discussing a change, such as a new job, marriage, or pregnancy, rather than a tragedy.
Death may appear to invite us to explore the feelings we have about our mortality and that of our loved ones.
Another card that speaks of change is the Wheel of Fortune. The Wheel of Fortune speaks to us of luck, fate, patterns, and karma. Yet, Major Arcana 10, the Wheel of Fortune, can also talk about the turn of the wheel that creates a change in your fortune. When upright, the change is desired. When reversed or ill-dignified, it may be a change you wouldn’t have asked for.
When we see the Wheel of Fortune as a card of change, we see the change as very likely unavoidable and likely caused by something outside of our influence. Death, too, will often speak of the changes we cannot avoid and did not create.
Which cards, then, speak of the changes we choose?
I think many of the Swords cards speak of our choices, as do a few Cups cards.
I have heard that some people see the Major Arcana, in general, as things that can’t be changed and the Minor Arcana as things over which we have influence. I bristle against this sweeping limitation. Yet, it is true that when we speak about change, the Major Arcana cards that address the energy of change do seem to talk about external influences, while the Minor Arcana cards do seem to indicate that we can make choices about the changes happening.

Making Magic
Do we ever perform magic to create significant change? I think sometimes we do, but it is usually for something specific, such as fertility magic to assist in becoming pregnant or money magic to assist in finding a new job.
Sometimes, we have the need for change but don’t know what change we want. I think it could be dangerous to manifest unspecified change. Here, I think it is better to ask for direction.
Divination is great magic for finding direction, but so is meditation. When we open our minds to the universe and ask for nothing other than a push in the right direction, positive change can come quickly!

Tricks and Treats
When we say that someone is haunted, very rarely do we mean to imply that they are having ghostly visitations. Rather, we are haunted by our memories and the injuries of our past. This week, we are putting those old ghosts to rest.
Not surprisingly, I love the spiritual and secular aspects of spooky season. I also love discovering the origins of all our holiday traditions. For example, the tradition of trick-or-treating originated from the custom of leaving sweets on doorsteps to placate the spirits who came back to seek vengeance on Halloween.
We humans often try to bargain with the energies we see as spiritual forces. That bargaining is something I think about often.
This week, though, I am contemplating the metaphor of appeasing our ghosts.
Beyond the concept of ghosts as actual spirits, we also use the term to describe things of our past with which we haven’t made peace. When we say that someone is haunted, very rarely do we mean to imply that they are having ghostly visitations. Rather, we are haunted by our memories and the injuries of our past.
To extend this metaphor, I think many of us are constantly tricked by the ghosts of our past. We often pay homage to what has hurt us rather than doing the painful work of healing.
Consider the person who grew up in an abusive family but puts their abuser on a pedestal or the person who blames others for their problems rather than taking responsibility for their own healing. It is impossible to heal when we cannot see or know the truth about our past.
Even those of us lucky enough to have avoided terrible trauma still have hurtful memories that cause us to believe negative and untrue things about life and about ourselves.
As we honor our ancestors and enjoy spooky season this month, let’s do what we can to put our personal ghosts to rest. We do that by unpacking and reprocessing past events, being gentle with our younger selves, and realizing that some things that we were taught and told might not be the truth.

StaarCon 5
One of the things I am excited about is that we will be talking about tarot in some very interesting ways at StaarCon 5. We will have sessions exploring connections between tarot and martial arts, neuroscience, music, and poetry. I am happy to announce that we are welcoming first-time presenter Caroline Ironwill to talk about tarot and neurodivergence. Caroline is a Canadian tarot reader and certified coach with a following on YouTube.
At StaarCon 5, we will discover many ways to understand and celebrate tarot. Please join us!
Ask Tarot for the Truth
Many tarot spreads have a position for the past or recent events. Yet, most tarot spreads do not offer positions to help us deeply unpack and reprocess the past, so we often have to ask the right questions and create our own spreads.
What are the best questions to ask the cards when we are trying to understand something from the past? We want to discover the truth rather than the mythology that has sprung up about the past. That means we are asking the cards to show us what is true about something or someone. For example, we can ask questions such as the following.
What was this person’s intention when they did this?
What were the factors present at the time that caused me to make this choice?
How did those long-ago events affect my life?
What is true about this situation?
What can I know about this?

Making Magic
Can magic help us release the ghosts of our past? Yes, but we need to be careful to avoid spiritual bypassing and what therapists call “magical thinking.”
In psychology, magical thinking is the belief that our thoughts and actions directly influence external events.
But, wait a minute, isn’t that what we magical people know to be true?
This is where critical thinking is paramount.
We know that magic works and can make a difference. Yet, we also know that the magical and the mundane must work together. If we are doing magic to heal, we must also do the daily tasks that promote our healing and avoid the things that hurt us.
I believe that tarot is a fabulous magical tool for helping us understand and release our personal hauntings. Yet, we must show up for the deeply emotional work that goes along with understanding tarot and ourselves. The efficacy of our magic will be directly affected by the depth of our emotional presence.

Mary Canane and Susan Morgan on the Psychic Cafe
Show date:
On February 23rd our topic on the Psychic Cafe was "Emotional Healing." I wanted to present some alternatives to traditional psychotherapy that were medically sound and spiritually based. My guests were Mary Canane, LMHC, and Susan Morgan of the Mystic Dream Center.
In addition to traditional psychotherapy, Mary Canane provides healing opportunities with games, ritual and retreats in nature.
Susan Morgan practices shamanic dreamwork for groups and individuals.
The insights and opportunities offered by these two healers were expansive and inspirational.
