How We Stay Grounded

A question arose recently during a livestream tarot reading broadcast. The cards that appeared prompted me to pose this question to a viewer for their consideration, but it is one that we should all consider.

What do you ground yourself in?

Some tarot cards, especially in the suit of Pentacles, invite us to ensure our energy is grounded. When we teach tarot, we tell our students to ground and center to begin the process of preparing for a reading. But what do we mean when we speak of grounding in this context?

In psychology, grounding is seen as a self-soothing technique that can stop racing thoughts and bring us back to the present. In the spiritual world, we recognize these helpful and healing aspects of grounding, but we also see grounding more tangibly. Grounding is the meditative practice of connecting with the energy that stabilizes, protects, and nurtures us. Often, we practice a specific meditation that builds energy in the root chakra, sending the energy down our legs, out of our feet, and into the earth. We envision energy curling into the ground, much like the tendrils of roots. From there, we can bring the energy of Earth up through those roots to sustain us.

Grounding can be an ideological foundation. We can be grounded in a belief system that sustains us and moves us forward, or we can try to ground ourselves in something that has no substance or energetic truth. Grounding into a pretty lie seems easy in the beginning, but over even a short time, it can erode our stability and therefore undo our sense of grounding.

Beyond meditative grounding exercises or relying on faith as a foundation, we can also ground ourselves in a purpose or activity that helps us feel emotionally regulated. Some people enjoy activities such as crafting, cooking, cleaning, gardening, sports, or exercise to help them feel grounded.

It is challenging to stay grounded in difficult times, but staying grounded is often what enables us to get through them most easily.

The StaarCorner

The StaarCon 5 AfterGlow continues with two fabulous events this week.

On Thursday, May 15, from 5:30 – 6:30 pm, please join us for Mystic Lounging with Serena Fox.

As we begin to revel in the sun and summer months, marked by growth, vitality, and fertility, we’ll check in with our cards to see where we stand and seek advice on successful forward motion. We’ll also discuss warnings and obstacles.

On Saturday, May 17, from 10:00 – 11:30 am, join us for a Lenormand Workshop with Michelle Barrie, where she will teach her Expanded 5-Card Spread.

Discover the power of the Lenormand 5-Card Spread, a concise yet profound method for gaining insight into past, present, and future influences. This workshop goes beyond traditional interpretations by incorporating Michelle’s Expanded Technique, offering a deeper, more layered approach to uncovering hidden messages and patterns within your readings.

What You’ll Learn:

·         The core structure of the 5-Card Spread and how to interpret its flow

·         The central card as the "now"—the focal point of the reading

·         Understanding past, present, and future influences within the spread

·         The Shadow Card—a hidden influence placed below the central card, revealing underlying energies or subconscious factors

·         Utilizing the numbers on the cards to unlock additional layers of meaning and insights

·         How to weave the cards together to tell a cohesive story with accuracy and clarity

We are making exciting plans to make StaarCon 6 more affordable, accessible, and valuable. Given the value StaarCon 5 is offering, you may wonder how we can improve on that. Get ready for some exciting announcements coming soon!

Tarot Grounded in Reality

After thirty years of professional tarot reading and many more years of study and exploration, the magic of tarot never fails to impress and inspire me. Yet, I am often disheartened by the unrealistic beliefs and expectations that many people have about tarot and tarot readers.

Further disappointing is that some of the people who hold these unrealistic beliefs are tarot readers themselves.

To be clear, I do not want everyone to see and understand tarot in the same way I do. One of the most magical things about tarot is how uniquely it works with each individual. Yet, I often see people who are hurt, misled, and confused by the cards, rather than enlightened, empowered, and uplifted.

How can we stay grounded in reality when working with tarot? There are some general rules we can follow that will keep us grounded most of the time. If the reading aligns with what is actually happening, the interpretation is likely appropriate. If your use of the cards is leading you to make healthy choices and solve problems, you are likely using them effectively.

When we ascribe to tarot magical powers it does not have, we diminish the magic it does have.

Community

One of my favorite grounding activities is gardening, because it connects us literally and directly with the element of Earth.

So many of us live in places where we cannot have a garden. Yet, community garden plots are often available and can be a cost-effective way to provide fresh food for your dinner table.

Community gardening is a great way for introverts to engage in social interactions. There are rarely formal meetings or events. However, the sharing of techniques and a shared love of gardening can help friendships grow, just like the plants.
