Five Steps for Intuition

Concept illustration of intuitive guidance.

We had a fascinating conversation about intuition at our monthly tarot meetup at Panera Bread in Palm City this past Sunday. We wanted to come up with some practical steps for engaging intuition in tarot reading and in life.

I was impressed with the collective wisdom of our group. I wish I had been prepared to take notes because so many good ideas were flying around the room.

We ended up making a list of things to do to engage intuition without explicitly trying to do this. Interestingly, this list does not contain some things you would expect. For example, no one suggested meditation as a way of increasing intuition.

I think we are all increasingly frustrated with the advice to “trust your intuition” with no accompanying practical advice on what that means.

The first step that was mentioned is to become a good listener. Listen deeply to your client in a reading. Listen clearly to what you are saying to yourself. Quiet yourself enough to hear your inner voice of guidance.

Next, pay attention to what you feel in your body. Truth and untruth will resonate in your body. Different people feel it in different ways. Learn what the truth feels like in your body.

The third thing we discussed was logic. What place does logic have in the intuitive process? We often talk about disconnect and conflict between the heart and the head. Yet, accurate intuition can often be enabled by logical thought. Much of the time, the truth will be logical. Some of the time, it won’t be. Logic is a good tool to help us consider what might be possible as we work to discover what is true. In a tarot reading, logic works with intuition to help us understand the context in which to interpret the card.

The fourth thing we discussed is detachment. The voices of fear and desire are intuition-killers. We discussed various ways to bring ourselves to a place of compassionate detachment to hear our intuition clearly.

Finally, we discussed ways in which we not only hear our intuition but also see signs to guide us, both in our mind’s eye and as we move through our daily lives. This is especially helpful in tarot, where we may visually perceive the same card differently from reading to reading.

It became clear that we each had different experiences and experienced intuition uniquely. For example, some people find that their first thought is usually correct, and subsequent thoughts come from second-guessing.  For others, the first thought is a reaction rather than a truth. We must each take time to see how we hear and see guidance most easily.

The value of these conversations in community cannot be understated. Likewise is the value of the collective wisdom that comes from the community.

Intuitive Tarot

What is intuitive tarot reading, and how does it work? Some professional readers use tarot in their readings but have never studied the cards. They let the images and colors stimulate their intuition. While I believe that without solid tarot knowledge, they only get half the story, it is indeed powerful to know that, very often, a person with no classic understanding of the cards can still use them to find wisdom.

I see this in beginner tarot classes when I ask people who have never seen the cards to pull a card and say what they think it is telling them. Often, what they are inspired to say is both relevant to them and akin to traditional keywords and interpretations.

For me, intuition works hand in hand with class interpretive skills. Here are two of the ways that can happen.

Intuition tells us which of the many possible meanings for a card is most appropriate. Intuition tells us of all the matters presented by the cards in a spread, which is most pressing.

Interpretation gives us the basics of the story. Intuition gives the story color and texture.

Making Magic

Can we do magic to increase intuition? Yes, there are many ways to do this. One of my favorites is to work with herbs. The way we use herbs in magic is so versatile. We can burn incense or oils, wear oils, drink teas and tinctures, and sprinkle herbs anywhere.

Which herbs are best to encourage intuition? I like damiana, mugwort, rosemary, frankincense, and lavender best.

It is easy to experiment to see which fragrances and flavors seem to stimulate intuition for you.
